I have a cc108,the last couple of times after use.I idle down and shut engine off.By the time I get the key out.The starter starts turning.The only way I can stop it is to disconnect the neg battery lead. I suspected the ignition switch ,so I installed a new one.Still doe!s the same thing.So now I am leaving the battery disconnected while not in use.I will change the seloniod next.The safety switch was disconnected when I bought the tractor. I would appreciate any help with this problem. 8) :)

I would also check the voltage regulator. Sounds like there may be a set of contacts stuck that is supplying power to the S/G. Not common with Cub Cadets, but not unheard of either.
 
Bruce are you sure that starter is not also running while the engine is running?. I had that happen before and could not hear it from the engine noise.
 
Thanks for your input.I guess it will be a process of elimation.I have to wait for a couple of days for a newly ordered seloniode, and go from there.I will let you know the results.I do not want to burn out the s/g. 8) :) Thanks again! Bruce

These tractors use a combined starter/generator. So yes, I expect it is turning while the engine is running.

I agree with Paul, the regulator is the most likely problem. Now that it has done some cranking through the stuck cut-out points, I would guess they are probably thoroughly welded together.
 
I am almost certian that is the cutout relay portion of the relay that welded it self closed. That relay closes to put 12 V. to the field for the generator and when the key is turned off that is suppuse to open. You can try an igition file or burnishing tool on those points but I think you will need a new regulator. Pull the cover off and check those points. If you can find a Sten's dealer that gives a discount you can get them for about $30. the Sten's part number is 435-040. Don't pay list of $65.50. the price may be higher as I am looking at an older catalog.
 
I will pull the cover off the regulator and have a look at the contacts.
What I don!t understand is that it only happens once in awhile. Well we will see. Thanks again. 8) :) Bruce
 
Bruce: Those points get pitted as they arc every time they engage and they only get worse. I remember this from when the cars used th VR system that if you pushed that contact with your finger when the key was on it would stay closed, but they would work properly and release when the key is turned off. They used the slight charge coming from the generator to pull that relay in when there is enough rpm's to make charging system work. On a car because The motor part wasn't enough to turn the engine so you had a dead battery real fast and didn't know till it happened.
 
Thanks for your help. I instaled a new solenoid today,started the 108 a few times. The s/g did not try to start again.I will check points on regulator as well. I just wanted to make sure it was the solenoid first. 8) :)
