Rough rough running

I'm getting my '54 ready for snowplowing. It was running fine, except it was barely charging. Generator belt was very loose so I took the hood off to tighten up the belt. Charging great now, but running very rough. I thought I might have got some junk in the fuel after taking the hood off, so I cleaned the carb and line and have plenty of fuel. It will run at idle, but coughs and sputters as I increase RPM's. I played with the timing this summer so I thought I would check it again. With the pickup on the #1 wire, the timing light does not give a steady flash but hits and misses with the rough running...

Seems like ignition. All wires appear to be tight. I did not dig into the distributor yet- what should I look for and/or what else would cause the symptoms?

Thanks.

I would clean and adjust the points but don't discount the possibility of a fuel problem. Remove and clean out the main jet with a soft copper wire and air nozzle. You most likely have a piece of dirt in the jet.
