Reviving a 59 140

Hey folks, so this weekend I finally got around to getting started on getting our 140 running, it’s been sitting somewhere around 15-20 years. I’m starting this thread to document/ask as I make may way through it.
The first issue I’ve already ran into is the starter won’t engage.
When I put the battery in it, I got the lights to come on, however I never could get the starter engage (no clicks or anything).
Should I pull the starter off first or is there something else I should try first?

And if that doesn't work, pull the starter switch off and check underneath inside. I have seen them burned from arcing and won't make contact. I have cleaned them up using a file scraping across that lug inside.

If that doesn't work, loosen the bolts enough to pull it back some, and reinstall. I've seen them stick in the flywheel enough you think the engine is locked up. Can always remove and bench test. If it still doesn't work, probably time for a rebuild. Luckily we still have a fellow who does quality rebuilds in our area. I'd much rather do that than buy from a supplier, and you know what you have, and if you still have a problem you can take it back, but never had to do that with one of Les's rebuilds.

lol!!--- funny that you have starter problems, ---- mine quit last week on my 140 too! LOL!! nuttin $200 ( or more) at local repair shop cant fix! --- I am going to take mine apart and see what it looks like inside. Been actin strange for 2 years but always worked. Had to hammer on it a few times BUT last week that didnt work.
Looked at cub, 240, 340, 404, 504, 2444, 574 , and they all different starters, --- mount different and probably different rotation than 140. Kinda an oddball from the looks of it! Anyway if you take yours apart, --- look at the brushes and the holders, springs, etc. in there burned connectors also can be a problem. I figure the brushes are worn out and they would be a lot less than $200 to replace! ( I would hope!!!)

Thanks for the replies! I'll definitely try that when I can get back to it. Luckily, we also have a guy that still rebuilds starters/alternators near me if it needs that, I've actually been meaning to drop off the starter for my 49 M to him anyway.
