Price of Hay

Neighbor who runs cattle on our acreage mowed and round bailed the fescue grass on the top of the ridge. 28 round bales on the ground. Neighbor also bailed the grass off of his pasture adjacent to the acreage. This was the first time in 17 or so years that the top of our hill/pasture and the neighbors pasture had been baled.

We had been in the abnormally dry area for most of this year.

This prompted a local craigslist search. Lot of folks looking for hay. Few folks offering hay for sale. Lot of hay is $90 to $100- a round bale. 50 lb. square hay bales, $10- each.

One individual had round bales for $150- each, delivered. The ad said that the hay was from Kentucky.
 
Small grass bales are $10 here in Colorado, but if it doesn't rain, there won't be much of a second cutting which will raise the price.
 
It's much cheaper around here, round bales of mixed starts at $20, better mixes goes up to $40. Probably why they could afford to haul it from Kentucky.

Several neighbors have local people hay it for them, guy across the road from me hays probably 5 acres. I have about 3 acres I would like to have hayed, left word with the neighbor to contact me, never heard back. Thought since he brought his equipment that close that he would be interested, guess not.
 
Besides working on Cubs every day I am a hay farmer, it is peaceful work and I enjoy being in the field, make 9-10,000 every year, I am 100 miles north of NYC, Here small squares are $5.50, if you bring them to the city $15, made 5,00 in the past 3 weeks, the ground is bone dry and unless we get a lot of water there will not be much for a second cut, its a crazy market here, 100 miles north they struggle to get $2-3 a bale, most of my hay goes to horse people with $$$, cow farmers want round bales but do not want to pay for them, it is not worth it to me to make rounds as they will only pay $30-50 a bale, it takes maybe 20 small squares to make that round bale so why throw that money away to make rounds, NY Hay from the Hudson Valley is considered to be some of the best you can buy, I have customers from hundreds of miles come here to get it
