Painting Grill Screen

I know there are some older threads on replacing a grill screen and, specifically Dale Finch, painted her screen black on a red grill and did a fantastic job on her 11 bar grill. In my case, I found a nice 11 bar grill with only about four bars that needed some straightening. I removed and will replace the grill screen and I’m not overly concerned about matching the original mesh, so I have your standard hardware cloth which is 4 squares per inch. Already had some of it brand new from past projects and it is dull gray galvanized. I typically buy Rust Oleum spray paint because it’s readily available for a decent price and I’ve had good luck with it. Rust Oleum recommended their Universal Bonding Primer when I painted a galvanized windmill a few years ago. It has held up really well.

I have enough metallic paint on hand to paint the screen the color I want to paint it. I have plenty of metal primer. I’m thinking that perhaps because the mesh is made of little wires and the paint is flowing around those wires, so it seems unlikely to peel off and perhaps I can skip spraying universal bonding primer for this type of application. I realize I can ask Rust Oleum this question but I suspect they’ll tell me to buy universal bonding primer so they can sell more product or they’ll just play it safe and tell me you’ll be better off with the universal bonding primer. I’m more interested in somebody with actual experience painting the screen.

I’m also trying to have fewer coats of paint on it. The screen I removed was 5 squares per inch and was painted with IH silver color and it has kind of a gummed up look to it from excess paint. I should clarify that I want to paint the screen a different color than the actual grill because I prefer that look. So my question would apply to somebody who installed galvanized mesh before finish painting the grill and painted it assembled or at least finished painted it assembled.

So my question is:

Has anybody painted a galvanized metal grill screen and did they paint first with a primer and what kind of primer did they use?
And if they didn’t use any kind of special bonding primer, how has the paint job held up?

I’m trying to avoid buying another $8 can of spray paint that I would use very little of and probably wouldn’t use in the future. It’s not so much the money, it’s just that I already have multiple cans of paint sitting around that that I’m unlikely to use again already.

Thanks
