Oil Pressure Relief Valve

I removed the plug from the side of the engine and the pressure spring. The valve itself seemed to be stuck. I put minimum pressure on it in both directions and it moved only slightly. How much should it move and should it be able to come completely out when the plug and spring are removed? It did help the oil pressure greatly, but now I don't know if it is stuck in or out. Thanks

It's stuck.

First try, remove the spring, replace the cap, start engine, stop engine. Remove the cap, the valve should be backed out and loose.

Second attempt. Search this site for a removal tool made by MidMo. It's a dowel with a slit cut in it's end and a tapered piece of wood. There is or was photos on this site.

48 cub. I used a 7/16" tap (I think thats the size) and ran it into the valve just enough to grab it and then pulled it out. The valve should move freely.

The tool worked like a charm. I am still amazed.

I was able to free mine with a brass rifle brush. I sprayed gum out into the hole, scrubbed for a spell, and the valve came out on the end of the brush. I think it was the 20 gauge shotgun barrel brush to be exact.

 Isn't the oil pressure valve at the back of the block by the pump? I'm putting mine back together and am getting confused at the size and location. The manual looks like they're pulling the spring out of one of the oil pump holes. Anyone have a clearer picture? :help:

pressure relief valve is behind the large hex plug on the right side of the block under the distributor or magneto

Hi,
The oil pressure regulator is not near the oil pump.
The oil pressure regulator is at the right front side of the engine, it is the large hex headed plug there.

You probably have to remove the upper bolt that holds the front end onto the engine block, to get a socket onto the plug head. Be sure the lower bolt is there and tight before removing the upper bolt.

Under the cap is a spring, and the valve, which should be free to slide in the hole. If it is stuck in place, it needs freeing. :)

if yall don't mind me askin, what's the symptoms of a stuck relief valve ? too much pressure low pressure ?
I was indicating very low oil pressure and mine was stuck deep in the hole.

Could be both.

Stuck against the oil gallery orfice, high oil pressuire. Stuck in the open position, to far out from the oil gallery orfice, low oil pressure.

Only way to tell is to remove the plug, check/inspect.

Normally, low oil pressure is caused by excess clearance in the rod and main bearings.
