Oil Filter Question

I picked up a '50 Cub from a member's neighbor a few weeks ago. Me and John had been working on it at this place. We got it where I could take it home over the weekend, August 4. I'm in the process of changing out the fluids and bought a NAPA 1153 for the oil filter. Here is what I took out of the tractor. It's a Fram TG10158 and I had quite the time of getting it out. It fit below the rim of the filter housing and was just almost the same diameter as the lip opening. There was a black, mushy seal/grommet/etc. on top of the filter that came out first. It's the black rubber thingy in the picture. My question is, does it belong and if so, where? Top of filter, bottom of filter, or not at all?

It does not belong. Probably just a seal for that particular filter. Your new filter should only go in one way.

That's what I thought, but just wanted to be absolute sure before I go to throwing things away. From the looks of the filter, it's time for a change. I"m also changing out the transmission oil - that darn old Woods mower is a bit in the way though, but still doable.

It was one of the dirtiest filters I've seen in quite a while. When I drained the oil, it was also one of the dirtiests I've seen. Same with the transmission oil, though I didn't see much indication of water in the transmission. From John knew, it was never kept outside, but condensation could have crept into the transmission.

The way that filter was built, it was hard to retrieve it from the housing. I had to pry it up with a screwdriver and needle nose pliers. It's a bit shorter than the correct filter and I'm assuming the little seal/grommet (whatever that black mushy thing was) was used to make up the height difference and maybe keep the filter centered in the housing.

My guess was that the rubber piece was both to make up space, and to seal the filter to the center bolt to make the oil flow through it rather than bypassing it.
