I have a 1948 cub , there seems to be 2 different oil filter cover styles, part # 251406r2 and 251406r1 are they interchangeable ? one has a convex top and the other a con cave top, also do they use the same gasket ? Thanks for any help, Jim
They interchange and use the same gasket and bolt. The R2 version is made of stamped steel. I'm not sure if I would call the top concave or convex, it has some of each. The R1 version is made of pot metal. It started out convex but usually ends up concave after years of overtightening. People generally have better luck preventing leaks with the R2 version.
Just an FYI. I suggest you double check to make sure the holes are clear in the threaded end of the filter bolt (end as well as the metering hole in the side (about a #60 drill bit diameter).
One more question should both part # 251406r1 or 251406r2 be installed with the dome up the original has a flat surface and the newer one has a more rounded surface the comes in contact with the filter housing.
Hi,
The 1st style of oil filter cover started out like in the pic below from the 1947 Cub owner's manual, but like Jim said, they bend.
Below is a page from a 1957 Cub owner's manual, when they had changed to the 2nd style of cover, showing that the dome in the center of the cover points up.
