It’s been 57 years since JFK was assassinated. I was 5 years old in first grade in a country school in rural Wisconsin. It wasn’t much different than the school you see in an old TV Western. It was a one room building out in the country with about 25 students ranging from 5-10 years old. I was in first grade and all 6 first grade students were lined up in a row of desks. There were 5 girls and me. The schoolmarm (Mrs. Hoff) would teach a lesson to the first graders then give us an assignment to work on and move on to the next row of second graders for their lesson and continue down the rows to 3rd and 4th graders. I had 3 sisters in the same room.
We had two outhouses for bathroom breaks. No running water in the outhouse. Just a hole dug in the ground and a wood shack over it.
On November 22, 1963 a girl named Sandy returned to school from an appointment. She told the teacher that President Kennedy had been shot. The teacher didn’t believe her and school continued like normal.
In the early 1960s as a young kid WWII seemed so far in the past. In another 25 years there will be very few left who will remember the day JFK was assassinated.
