New Trailer For Cub Haulin Decision Made!

Thinking of a new utility style trailer for hauling my Cub arround. Last trailer was a real dissapointment and I don't want to make a mistake again. I am looking for a 12-16ft trailer, tandem axle, brakes on one axle. I need to stay in the $1,500 range. I am looking at this one on :eBay:TILITY-CAR-HAULER-FLATBED-ATV-TRAILER_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742Q2em153Q2el1262QQcategoryZ80770QQihZ027QQitemZ400043732408QQtcZphoto here's a link to the manufacturers page http://www.gatormade.com/trailers/trail ... elutil.php
It looks pretty nice for the money. Has anybody had any experience with this brand? Any other suggestions on what to watch for? Or any other brands that are good in my price range.
Thanks,
Rick

Thats a nice looking trailor. I've been thinking about one like that too. I would think the tail-gate would have to go and use ramps for loading and un-loading a cub though.

I don't know anything about that brand, although I have seen them, but if you are going to buy a tandem axle, I believe you should consider brakes on both axles. I think you will like them better than just on one axle. I have had both and I think it easier to adjust the controler and prevent wheel lockup with brakes on both axles, which tends to happen with only one axle brakes on a two axle trailer (you can "unload" the brake axle on rough roads, causing wheel lockup just when you need them) , and it is cheaper to buy them on the new trailer than it is to add them later............and it may save you some "listening time" with a DOT officer.

I have been pulling a Gator Made 16' tandem axle trailer for 6 or 7 years now and it has been trouble free.

those mesh ramps are nice for loading things on the trailer - no aiming. BUT - if you intend to do highway driving with it, you would be amazed how much wind resistance they cause. consider a model with individual ladder type ramps.
then you have another choice...flip up ramps are convienent, stow away ramps leave the rear of the trailer unobstructed and offer no wind resistance, but you have to handle them into position each load.

brakes on both axles, no question

decisions, decisions

sure can't beat a tandem axle they sure pull better then a single less swaying back 'n fourth :big afro:

Rick , I have a 16 ft. very similar to your picture. Mine also has a side gate on the right front wide enough to load your four wheel ATV or lawn mower without unloading your Cub or whatever. I like it very much and given the choice I would go with the brakes on both axles also if you intend to travel with it. Just my 2 cents :D

I saw in some posts back by Ralph that he had a single axle Gator, naturally it was red in color. It looked like a nice trailer! How would a single axle hold up though?

this work perfect for 1 cub,has brakes, and pulls great.Corn Pro

Single axle trailer will bounce you and your cargo all over the place. 16-18ft is the way to go, tandam. Brakes on at least on axle preferrably both. With drop down ramps each side.

As was mentioned the mesh full size ramp, increase gas consumption, wind resitance and heavier to pick up in later years. I got an 18 ft with ramps, no brakes,

looking for 18ft with drop down ramps, with brakes, one in town here for 1500, red, if only........

The trailer you are looking at looks like it would be strong but light. In the past I always built the trailer to carry a tank and some weighed 2500 lbs empty. Today I would go more like the one you are looking at twith the top rail adding rigidity. I still prefer Surge brakes and they have done me well. There have been times on loose dirt where the trailer dragged the truck abit when backing down a hill but not enough to really worry me. Electric brakes are good and you would probably be less likely to lend your trailer out if they don't have a controller in their truck.

if you have 1 or more cubs, get the 18ft with ramps. I have a 16ft trailer, that has been modified.so it is actually 17ft. 18ft will handle 2 cubs and implements fine. 16ft will handle 1 cub and implements fine. and get both axles with brakes. Buy it once and have it forever, or buy it twice. just my $.02

You're dead on about buying twice :x That's basically what I am doing. 15 months ago I bought my single axle (B.C.-Before Cub) I won't name names but it came from Sikeston MO. I keep it in a open barn out of the weather. Been used maybe 5 times, never in the winter. It has turned into a rustbucket. I talked to my local dealer about the problem and his reply was" well it's a cheap trailer, not made that good, they use cheap paint at their factory) Needless to say I was :x and replied " you sure didn't tell me that when I wrote the :censored: check, walked out and won't return! Sure wish I was a member of this forum when I bought it, I would of had people that know their stuff to help like I do now:applause: I have emailed the manf. 3 times about the problem and have not heard a word back from them.
Fortunatley my yougest son called today and said that he had several people interested in the trailer (for $100 less than I paid for it :{_}: ) I will be very happy with that and it will get me 1/2 the way to a new tandem :D
I really like the looks and construction of that Gator trailer, hope it all works out and I will have a nice roadtrip into Kentucky to pick it up!

Thanks again guys!
Rick (vacation is over and back to work tomorrow :( )

I would take a good hard look at Trailerman trailers around your area. They are good quality, and painted well. If I decide to buy a new trailer (not as desperate now that my lights are fixed) it will be a Trailerman.

I really like the trailermans also, they're made only about 50 miles from me. But their prices are higher than I can afford by quite a bit! I need to save some money to finish the Cub and the youngest son gets married at the end of next month and we want to get them a really nice gift (not my Cub though)

From what I've learned lately it depends on brand, how it's equipped and condition :D

I'm sure you will be happy with that one. We have a Gator Made dealer near us but I've been by the factory a couple of times as my wife's family is not too far from Somerset.
