New to the forum starting with the carb

Hello All. What a fun group. Okay I admit I've been lurking for a while. It's a big step when you submit your first post to the collective. I've recently acquired a 49 Cub with front and rear weights, plow, dbl disk harrow, a pile of pieces I'm told is at least one cultivator, a home made drag bar and two weeks ago picked up a sickle bar mower and Grader blade at the Brooks Steam up in Oregon.

I actually purchased the Cub last November but just now starting to work on it. The previous owner a good friend said it was running fine when he parked it due to medical reasons. When he tried to start it for me gas was squirting out of the side of the carb where the gasket for the Lid fits the carb body.

I want to play with it this weekend can I get buy with just replacing the gasket and see if that works or should I just dive in and fix it anyway? The sediment bowl is clean as is the inside of the tank with casual inspection. Gas flow freely. I'm going to drain existing fuel and replace with fresh before trying to start it.

Ihave the owners manual, parts manual from Binder Books with the service manual on order to arrive next week.

I purchased a BK carb kit at the Steam up and after reading some of the posts purchased an OEM IH kit. Ouch! Also grabbed wires, cap, rotor, rotor drive while I was there. The plugs look fressh from the outside but figured I did not need to buy those from Case IH. If I need plugs what is the favored brand and part number?

Any suggestions or advice before I actually touch this marvel?

If you have the IH carb kit go ahead and fix it the way it should be fixed. I wouldn't just replace the gasket because most likely the throttle body is warped hopfully not to bad. The throttle body got warped in the first place by over tightening the screws.

Welcome to this great forum, great bunch of people too! :D I would also suggest doing the full carb rebuild. If you dont have the rebuild kit, you can pick one up for around 20-25 on Ebay. Good luck and happy Cubbin'. 8)

Well the answer to that question is and should be : Fix it first... it will be more fun that way when you actually get to play with your Cub. It is kind of disheartening when the Cub doesn't run quite the way you wish it to.. You have the IH Carb Kt, so you are already half way there. Check out Lurker Carl's Cub Carb Fixes. Use the articles to guide you through rebuilding your carb. Then remount the carb after you have double checked the rest of the fuel system and changed out the gas. Then when you start up your Cub, it will perform much better than just attempting to fix the leaky gasket.

Well the Good Book says Champion D-21 or is intermittently used, then D-16's would be a good choice. Now askin about plugs is about as useful as asking about oil -- and gonna get you just as many opinions, so I will just say this.. Use the brand that you are happy with and just cross the Champion number to that plug. Me I am partial to Bosch and NGK's... but I use Champs in my Cub. They are all pretty much made in the same half dozen factories anyways I would imagine... :roll: :lol:

I would suggest that you read this thread: New Members and Visitors, Please READ Prior to Posting. There are many great links to informative pages such as the ATIS FAQ's 1 and ATIS FAQ's 2, The Best of H.L. Chauvin who has written very interesting articles on troubleshooting common problems with your Cub.


Also, you might want to visit the Cub Manual Server as there is tons of info on servicing, maintaining and re-building your Cub. In addition to this basic information, there are also a number of other useful tools available on the server. There is the Specialty Services page which has contact info for neat stuff like getting your seats recovered, buying quality Decals, Serial Number tags and a host of other neat items. Also there are the Parts Pages - both Used Parts Suppliers and New Parts Suppliers pages with links to quality dealers. I am always looking for YOUR favourite dealers for New and Used Parts to include here. These are intended to complement the businesses who support FarmallCub.com Website.

I would also recommend that you visit Binder Books and purchase the three most important manuals you can own for Maintenance, Repair and Rebuilding your Cub. These are the Owner's Manual, the GSS-1411 Service Manual and the TC-37F Parts Manual. Although they are available on the Cub Manual Server, it is better is you also have your own paper copy. Binder Books is the only Authorized IH Publication Reprint House and they have the best quality manuals available. Most other's are not of the same quality. Just a personal thought here, the I&T Shop Manuals, although helpful in some areas, really are not sufficient for the job. If you wish though, they are good additional reference works.

In addition to the above information, don't forget to check out the various articles that are available to help with your Repair, Restore, Rebuild or just your Maintenance Projects. There are a number of sub pages such as Electrolysis or Rust Zapper's, Maintenance Tips, Jigs and Techniques, Implement and Part Sketches and of course the Paint, Decals & Other Finish Questions which has the Paint Chart and the Paint Committee Decisions links.

Dan welcome to the group, you'll find thsi is an amazing bunch.

about your carb problem, yes you need to replace th gasket, but that's not your main problem. It is flooding form either dirt under float valve, vlave sticking, bad float, etc. Gas should not be up to the gasket.
 
As I recall, the carb rebuild kits at TSC are a no-no, correct? Something about the gaskets being too big near the float, and having oblong holes at the manifold?

Should I go with the Case brand kit when I do my rebuild?

Someone just sent me 3 carbs and 3 kits to play with. 2 of the kits are IH and the other is a Tisco. The Tisco kit is incomplete as well as inferior to the IH kit. I can post a picture of the difference in the two gaskets if you would like to see it.

I don't like the cheap gaskets either, but for a different reason than most quote. I just think carburetor gaskets should be made of fuel resistant material. I simply don't see how they could possibly expand enough to interfere with the float... they're just too high above and far away from the float. :shock:

I just received a half dozen IH gaskets from Joe's Farmall Parts and they cost only $2.21 ea. The gasket is often the only part needed. Clean is needed much more than parts!

I agree that the gasket is to high to interfere. The biggest reason that I favor the IH kits is they are pretty much complete with new shaft seals and keepers. While the gasket in the Tisco kit will work they are not cut as precise as the IH:

Thanks for the responses. Unfortunately My two little ones a six and two year olds and regular chores took most of my Saturday. I'm also building a custom pencil /supply box for the six year old as school starts in a few weeks. I did squirt some permatex solvent on the nuts and bolts everywhere to hopefully ease things a bit. I also picked up a gallon carb cleaner kit. Momma's Birthday is tomorrow so I will try again Monday or Wednesday night.
