New to me 1948 C

Bought a non running C back in October 2019.
Engine is stuck!
Found a bit of time one evening before the weather got nasty and I pulled the spark plugs to find #1 cylinder full of water, so then I proceeded to drain the radiator, then drained the engine oil (and all the water too)!



Previous owner had it in a barn.
Auction company had it outside.
Really do not know when the water got in there.

Hoping to get some time to pull the head off when the weather breaks here to have a better look.

I am betting the engine is junk, but hopefully it is salvageable!

Everytime I think of this tractor, I think how nice a c135 would be under the hood!

Tractor came with the front mount cultivators.

One thing I notice with a C is it looks like a pain to get on and off!! :shock:

Oh-yea, it had one tire low on air, so I figured I would air it up before I unloaded it off the trailer.... Well, that did not end too well, before I had 10psi in it a section erupted and it was like the tire grew a tumor the size of a party ballon!



Shame, the tires have good tread!

Depending on where the seat is adjusted at, it can be a pain to get on and off. But, the seat is adjustable, so you can slide it back a bit to get more room to get on and off. The '49 C that I traded for, the previous owner did not know about the seat adjustment and he had it pull forward so getting on and off was a chore. When I got there, I slid the seat back and he said he didn't know the seat did that.

Farmall51 has a C with a C-153 engine in it that he and his wife tractor pulls with. It's pretty salty....

Thin sleeves to make it a 123 will make it pretty snappy. I'd like to add a C or Super C with cultivators to the collection one day.

Well....... I spent a bit of time with the C today.

Took the valve cover off!
Powdery rust on the valve train.



Got the head off!
Dome pistons! #1 bore is crusty! 2, 3 and 4 dont look too bad!




Someone already put 3.125 overbore kit in!


While I did not see any smoking gun yet, my bet is the head is cracked from water running down the exhaust!

Engine serial number (FCM19538) is lower than tractor serial number (FC19674)!

Pulled the oil pan off on Tuesday, March 2..... Yuk!
Found the oil pickup just lying in the pan. (Not in the position shown in the pic!)


The aluminum bottom of the oil pump looks like it is disintegrating!


Took the cotter pins out of the connecting rod nuts, and loosened them up.


Still can not budge the crankshaft using the hand crank!
Oil pump seems stuck too!

Nothing in it is going to turn until you get the pistons loose. Inside doesn't look too bad to me. The oil pump just needs a good cleaning, and you'll probably need to hone the cover with a super fine sheet of sandpaper on a pane of glass or other perfectly flat surface to get it smooth.

Is there a trick to get the oil pump out of the engine block?

I removed the 2 screws in the side of the block and tapped on the pump in a downward motion with a piece of wood and hammer. No luck! :shock:

Is there a hidden fastener somewhere, or is it just stuck?

Got the oil pump out today!

5 foot prybar and light taps on the side of the oil pump with a brass hammer!

The oil pump just needs a good cleaning, and you'll probably need to hone the cover with a super fine sheet of sandpaper on a pane of glass or other perfectly flat surface to get it smooth.

The aluminum bottom of the oil pump is scrap. It is disintegrating. The area of the aluminum where the oil pick-up tube goes is gone! Lol

Managed to get the center two pistons moving.

Crank still will not turn. Rod bearing caps are off.
Tapped all the lifters up away from the cam, but I am thinking that the cam is froze up in the block.

Well finally got all the pistons out! Whew!

The reason I could not turn the crank is because the governor was seized up in the block.

from the rusty condition of the valve train, i'd say a fair bit of water went through this motor. I'm surprised the oil pan is not rusted out like one i had last winter ( a C135 in a 340U). So the valve train is junk and I'd venture the head will need everything - valve inserts, guides, replacement valves. not worth it to save.

The cam looks marginal at best, and the difficulty you had removing the oil pump attests to that. the oil pump, at least the base, is junk. I'd guess from the governor being stuck that the cam and crank gears are rusted up as well. governor is probably junk, too.

So, if i owned this tractor and the rest of it was in decent shape, I would scrap it and find a replacement motor. C113 engines are easily available

oh, and that 340U, too much was wrong with the motor including broken front ears poorly welded, and finding a C135 square block engine is near impossible.

add a rotted out gas tank etc and i made the decision to part it out.
