New, picked up my first Cub.

What does that yellow sticker under the lever say?

Normally the lever is used to release the hydro so you can push the tractor around.

Crawl under the tractor and move the lever up and down. There is supposed to be a metal tab on a cross bar that presses on a button to release the hydro.

Kohler engines to fit the frame are not hard to come by.

If you are not going to use the implement lifting system or the mower deck, what are you planing on using the tractor for.

Would you like to sell the tiller and mower deck?

I did, it does not connect or touch anything which is why I asked.

I do not want a Kohler in it. I already have the new heart for the tractor but I am just not ready to drop that ball yet. At this point in time I just want something a bit more capable then my old Craftsman. Plus I was looking for a new project to play with. I plan on going a different route to raise and lower things. I would likely have to modify this frame so much it will just be easier for me to make a new one to fit what I want to do.

At this point I am not wanting to sell any of the parts but it could happen in the future.
 
Good evening,was looking at your pictures,agree with mr Eugene on the purpose of the lever.I think if you will notice there will be 2 buttons on top of the hydro unit,the lever presses both downward to release the hydro unit,the tabs could be made fairly easy for the lever assembly.the 2 buttons look as if they may be stuck.they must move freely up and down,also you are missing a little L shaped bracket that attaches just in front of the lever that holds the lever in the raised/neutral position.I think I can see the stud it mounts to in the pic.Good luck with your project,those 127 are good little tractors,have owned one many years and use it often. Randy
 
If someone could get me a picture or diagram of how it is supposed to be that would be awesome. The whole area up there was covered in old dry oil and dirt. Something has been leaking for a while. It did not appear anyone had been in there for ages before I pulled it apart. So if a piece is missing it has not been there for a long while.

My hope is to get her back up and running better then new while being more useful.

Select Cub Cadet, then garden tractors, then model 127, then the major component. This will provide an exploded view of the parts as well as the IH part numbers.

You might want to book mark that site.

I use this site when I need parts for my Cub Cadets. Print out the exploded view and the IH parts number list. Take the exploded view and part # list to the Case/IH/CC dealer to order Cub Cadet specific parts.

Did a major rebuild on wife's 105 (now 125, replaced the engine years ago) last winter. The metal plate that attaches to the shaft for releasing the hydro was completely gone, rusted off. The part was still available from the near by Case/IH dealership.
 
Thanks, I found it. It almost looks like part of the "arm" snapped off. It looks much longer in the parts diagram then on my unit. They have it listed for $10. I will likely go a different route though. But now I know what it is for.
 
The little button on the lift lever works like this, you hold down the big button (vertical one on top) with your thumb, then pull in the little button with your index finger. This locks the big button down, so that the lift mechanism can float. You do this when mowing, then set the slide stop (down on the frame of the tractor) to set the desired mowing height. Most folks never even knew how this worked, but it is the way the tractor was designed. Cub Cadet mower decks were never designed to ride on the ground, and the skids/wheels were just intended as "anti scalping" devises. The height of cut is supposed to be set as I described, setting the stop down on the frame so the lever cannot go any further forward. With the lift button locked out, the mower deck can then float up over things if it needs to. Again, most folks just used the height adjust and picked a notch that they liked, and mowed there.

That yellow lever on the transmission tunnel would have had a tin like, piese of spring steel, about 2-inches wide welded to the lever, that would then stick out about and inch or so. When you lifted the lever, the spring steel would push down on the two release buttons on top of the hydro unit, so you could push the tractor around in your garage, or if you had to tow/pull the tractor, you could release the hydrostatic drive. It still wasn't recommended to tow the tractor any distance. It was really just intended so you could roll the tractor around by hand in your garage. Honestly, pretty much useless and a really crappy design. I'm not sure I'd even try to fix it, but an easy fix would be a piece of steel plate welded to the rod. Sheet metal was just too light, even though they used "spring steel", they pretty much all just broke off eventually.

Nice work so far. The frame is pretty simple, although, the tricky part is where the hydro linkage and mechanism bolts onto the steering tower. You would have to be REALLY careful and take a lot of measurements if you decide to build a new frame, to make certain you get the hydro levers and mechanism back in the exact position, otherwise, none of the hydro drive system willl work right. The tolerances are petty tight on that stuff, and there's not a ton of adjustment in the linkage. I've rebuilt a few of these tractors, and modified the frame in my last one to take a 14hp engine, and after looking at all the hydro stuff, I decided it was much easier to just modify the frame up front for the engine. Nearly any engine will bolt in that frame, I've even seen one with an Arctic Cat 440 snow mobile engine in it, which only took a little cutting/welding. But, it's all up to you.

The wide frame tractors could take the bigger hp engines, and they are substantially stronger with roll formed frames and thicker sections. Also, the transmissions are easier to get at because the tunnel cover comes off so you don't have to go under the tractor to get to things. That's about it. I've owned a bunch of both and have been happy with them all. No difference in performance, and there's just about the same implements for both. Although, the narrow farme mower decks are getting fewer and harder to find.
 
After looking all over the place I found the best deal on this size AG tires on www.tires-easy.com. They are BKT TR-315 23X8.50-12 C/6PR BSW and BKT TR-315 16X6.50-8 C/6PR BSW. I though about getting other brands but they were a bit more money. Tire prices are stupid these days. I mount them myself.

Really nice guy gave me an awesome deal on this running 149. Did not come with anything but the tractor. Motor leaks a bit and it has a charging issue of some sort he said. He put a few new parts on it but he really never did anything to it or used it. It had been sitting 18 months before I went and picked it up tonight. Added some fuel, and battery, and aired the tires and she fired off.

I am going to need a mule drive, pto clutch, and the rear lifting mechanism for it. Going to use it with the tiller.
 
No, no, no. I am not buying anymore until these two are finished. And after these are finished I doubt I will need another. Only way I am buying another would be to go larger.

So I did some work on the 149. Something is wrong with the charging system. It produces no voltage and the feed into the field is always hot. This is likely why it was killing batteries. He put in a new regulator but I am guessing he might have wired it wrong. Anyone have a diagram?

I fixed the fuel leak at the carb and cleaned out the bowel.

Changed the motor oil as he said he never changed it. It had a bunch of fine metal in the oil that I was not real happy to find. I put in some cheap oil to clean out the motor. I ran the mower around for a few to see what is up. This thing will scoot, I was not expecting that. Found the throttle cable is way out of adjustment. If you move it up a 1/4" from idle it is at full throttle. I have not fixed this yet, should not be hard as there looks like lots of adjustment points. Checked oil and it was much cleaner with no new metal.

Found steering gear a bit loose. Tightened up the preload on the gears. It needs tie rods and the drag bar is a bit bent.

The coupler off the motor is pretty worn out and has a good grove in it. The flex plate on the shaft has been removed and it is hard mounted. I think the fan might be missing also now that I think about it. I will likely make a new shaft and coupler and put the flex plate back in.

Once I can get the get the voltage issues narrowed down or solved then I might start fixing the leaks. Need to see if the PTO works also. Then to find a mule drive and rear hitch set up.
 
After doing some hard thinking tonight I have come up with a new plan since I now have 2 tractors. The 149 is going to need a bit of money, work, and parts to get it to run the implements and I think it might be a waste.

What is the value for the running Kohler in the 149? I think I am going to use the 149 as the base of my monster project I was originally going to do to the 127.

I think I will use the 127 to use the implements since it has the lifting system already and the 149 does not.

The 149 will get the FEL and be used for pulling trailers. The 127 will be used for running all the implements. I think that is how I see it now.
