New oil filter housing cap

Hello I have a 1948 cub and I ordered a new oil filter cap when I changed the oil on it. I got the copper washer and everything but when I put it on the bolt sticks up above the cap about 1/2 inch 3/4 of inch with it fully tightened. Am I missing something? I looked on tm parts and there’s no extra gaskets like the old one or washers to go with it? Thank you in advance!

Hi,
The 1st style of oil filter cover was cast soft material. They often bent down in the middle.
IH changed to the steel cover in the earlier 1950's.
The curved side of the 2nd style cover faces up.
Below is a page from the 1955 Cub operator's manual showing the 2nd style of cover in place.

They have said on here that sometimes the rubber cover gasket doesn't seal well with the engine block, the gasket squishes out of place when tightening the cover.
They have said the paper gasket works better, you can tighten the cover and the gasket stays in place.
TM Tractor Parts on here sells only the paper gasket. :)

There are 2 different bolts. The bolt has to match the oil filter cap you are using. After looking at your picture, the cap is on upside down. Turn it over and you should be fine.

Hi,
There are 2 different part numbers of oil filter bolts in the Cub and LoBoy parts manual.
It gives serial numbers when the bolts were used. They changed in 1964, when the 12 volt electrical system came out, and the block was changed, to make room for the 12 volt starter.
The database on here says that is when the 251341R8 engine block came out, that is the block made for the 12 volt starter.
Engine serial number 245701 is the 1st R8 engine, the database on here says. So the 2nd part number of oil filter bolt was used beginning in 1964, that is about 11 or 12 years after the 2nd style of oil filter cover came out, in the earlier 1950's.
Below is the page from the Cub and LoBoy parts manual, with the engine serial numbers of when the cover bolts were used. It looks like they used the same bolt for the cast, or steel oil filter cover, up to engine serial number 245701.

Below are pictures of the bolts from TM Tractor Parts.
