NAPA 6 volt regulator - with resister?

I got a VR851 6 volt positive ground regulator from NAPA. It came with a resister that the instructions say to put in series between the F terminals on the generator and the regulator.

Is this just if you convert from a cut-out to a regulator?

not sure, I know when I did electrical on my cub, it was all wrong with mismatched parts. The number of brushes in your generator will tell u whether u need a reg vs cut out and then wire to ammeter accordingly. I got my schematics for positive ground cut out online with google search.

This a 6-volt system and had a regulator on it. I think the resister must be for another vehicle that vehicle is speced for.

I have not heard of a resister used on the field connection or saw it on this site.

Yes they are consolidating parts and the resistor is to be used for cut out replacement

People have said the info on here before, about the number of brushes telling whether you need a voltage regulator, or cutout, IH calls the cutout a Relay.
It is not the same as what the the IH parts manual for the Cub shows.
It shows that the 3 brush generator was used with both a Relay and voltage regulator.

The Cubs with Relays on top of the gen had 3 brush gens from serial number 501, the 1st Cub, until serial number 115403. 115403 was made during 1950.
IH changed to the voltage regulator at 115403, and used a 3 brush gen until during 1962, at serial number 221293.
The 3 brush gen is sealed.

IH began using a 2 brush gen then at 221293. The 2 brush gen uses a voltage regulator also.
The 2 brush gen is vented at both ends, and uses a fan on the front pulley.

Below are pages from the Cub and LoBoy parts manual, TC37-F showing the gens, and the serial numbers they were used.
The 1st page below shows the 3 brush gen, the brushes are number 15 in the pic.
The description is on the 2nd page, it says 3 brushes.

Thanks for this info - I'm trying to make sense of the electrical system on the 60 Cub Lo-Boy I just picked up and this is helpful. Definitely a 6 volt generator but the coil tests like it is a 12 volt and voltage regulator is definitely not original.

Holy Smoke, NAPA wants $127 for a VR851. You can get a Standard Products VR214 from Rock Auto for $90 (same USA made regulator). Dave, if you provide some additional info, people might be able to help you better. What end state are you looking for? You can get a 6 volt coil that looks like the original from brillman.com for $60, if that is what you want. Do you know if the 6 volt generator works?

yes the resistor is not used in a regulator application, they are try to cut down on the amount of parts produced so they come with the extra resistor to be used in a cutout relay application, yes Rock Auto VR 214 is the same, add shipping to cost also
USA regulators are very pricey now, The foreign ones are poor quality and a waste of $$ as they normally do not last long

The info I wrote above is mostly for a regular Cub, but the parts manual pages also have info for a LoBoy.
The parts manual pages show that IH used the voltage regulator with the 3 brush generator for about 12 years on Cubs, and 7 years on LoBoys.
IH started making LoBoys in 1955. All LoBoys came with a voltage regulator.
Below are pages from the 1957 LoBoy operator's manual showing the electrical system, if you need them.
The middle pic on the 1st page shows the battery cable routing, if you need a pic of that.
The 2nd page has a pic of how the electrical system originally looks.
The numbers in the pic on the 1st page are explained on the 2nd page.

IH used the more modern style coil on the newer Cubs.
TM Tractor Parts, at the bottom of the page, sells them, they have the posts at the same end.

The newer style coil is a bigger diameter than the old coil, that had posts at both ends.
They also have a different bracket for that.
