MUD/DIRT DAUBERS

Have been working on FROSTY ['50 Demo] trying to get him read for his
big dance at Cubarama and got him all dressed up, put gas in his little
tank, got out my new steel [thanks to Mr. GW for the safety suggestion]
gas line that I purchased from one of the fine Cub parts suppliers on this
board. Got the proper connectors for my sediment bowl and carb did
a little fine tuning on the twists and turns to make it fit just "right" and
then tightened it all down. Turned on the gas, checked for leaks, expelled
the trapped air in the sediment bowl, and starts him up. Oh boy he sure
sounded good with his new little shiny muffler. I was standing there with
oh sooooo large a grin, then it happened; he just quit running.

Sooo I go back to basics, start checking for gas flow from the bowl, yep
flowing from tank, all air expelled, flowing out the bowl; not one single
drop at the other end of my new steel gas line.

I told you I had purchased earlier this year in preparation for this moment.
Here in Mississippi we have these little things called Dirt/Mud Daubers.
They fill every hole larger that a pin head with mud. Sure enough, ran a
small stiff wire through the line and about 3/4 inch from the other end it
stopped. With a little pressure out comes dust.

Lesson well learned. Always put tape over the end of all lines, pipes, or tubes. Just thought this might save some one else some trouble. Fortunately for me, not one single partical of dust got into the carb.

I had an old sediment bowl I was trying to clean out the cutoff on. Worked for several minutes trying to figure why i couldn't blow air through it, then realized mud daubers had filled in the end of my blow gun.

Spiders will do cause the same problem. Had an hit & miss that you had to keep the choke on all the time it ran. I had an old timer say check the mixer you have an spider nest in it. I said that can't be possible. It was. Also they mud dobers, spiders will get into motor home fridges & furnance an cause fires.

You know I was in my garage almost every day this summer and never seen only one blue colored wasp. But every darn thing including every mag cap ,coil cap, disasembled magneto,Every hose, like the above poster said everything with a hole about the size of a pen,.
Well one day I needed something and started to get it and seen her and took the either and put that bad girl to sleep for ever.lol
They like to get the drain cock on my carbs on the tractors as well.
She was a busy bee, No pun intended or maybe it was.

It amazes me, you can put 125 psi of air pressure against their nest plugging a hose or tube, and it won't budge. Hate 'em.
I put bits of paper in the mounting hole of my cub to keep them out.
Best,
Mike

We have a good supply of mud daubers in SW Arkansas but another insect gives me more problems on tractor and equipment. I never see the insect so I don't know what it looks like. However, it fills every small hole with a pure white substance. Mostly, I see this in small holes but they also fill unused bolt mounting holes in final drives. Anyone know what it is? Dan

WELL DAN THEY ARE EITHER THE SAME THINGS THAT WE ARE.oopps Talking about some type of Mud Wasp. OR its a spider The little black hairy ones build nests in stuff of mine and its a really tight white webbing. Usally when you open them up there is a black spider. At least up here in NY. The thing that gets me is when I get mags from who knows where with different kinds of spiders and maybe even baby Scorpians I dont know what the dead little buggers are for sure but I dont like them and wait to hate the day when the are alive in one that I rip apart.

Dan. I always thought that those white cap nests were still dirt dobbers also. So to be sure I opened some up, and called Mr Bridges in Homer (La.) Ag. Center and he confirmed that they are plain old dirt dobbers but he thinks the white cap indicates to them it is a larve nest.

Mike

Do you think we could send all thoes guys up north some FIRE ANTS

Mike: With the fire ants we have in south Arkansas and those you have in Louisiana we can supply the nation. Sure would like to ship a bunch of them out but I think they will be with us forever. Dan

Mike: I forgot to comment on the insect. I would not have thought that it would be a dauber since it does not form a nest like daubers do. They just find a cavity and seal the opening. However, maybe it is a different species of mud dauber with different adaptations. Dan

Those @!#*! MUD DAUBERS Have been gettin' into everthing that's got a hole in it (Lucky for me... I sit down & wear coveralls most of the time)

They were buildin' nests in the biminy covers on our pontoon boat until Carol Ezlizabeth stuffed cotton quilt batting into the open ends of each side of biminy frame flaps...WORKS LIKE A CHARM...the Daubers can't git through it...NESTS GONE...HOORAY for QUILTERS :!:

NOW...The ONLY PROBLEM I have is...Whenever I see Carol Elizabeth with cotton batting in her hand...I'M AFRAID TO STAND UP :!: :!: :!:
