Moles 4 / George 5

For the moment, I'm winning the battle!!! :D I've been using the 1000# roller regularly to flatten their !#$%^ tunnels. I never expected to actually harm them, but had hoped to narrow down their field of activity so I could take more drastic measures. They usually renewed about a 1/4 mile of tunnels within 24 hours.

I don't know if they enjoyed their digging or not but I can say I enjoyed driving Shorty pulling the roller.

Sunday I took the next step. I used the runabout shown in another thread for a source of CO with additives. I rigged a length of pipe for a cooler and then a hose to shove down the tunnels. Occasionally I added some fogging spray to the hot pipe to make the exhaust a little nastier.

It was rewarding to sit back and watch the smokey exhaust emerge some distance away. Time will tell whether any can recover from their new health problems, but for now they seem to have stopped digging.

I know I could get rid of them by killing their food source... grubs, but I don't want to also kill the earthworms. I depend on them for drainage and for other reasons.

George, at my old home, I had a mole problem and the little buggers would go right to the edge of my neighbors lawn and just stop and run right down the line staying on my side of the yard. I could never figure out how or why they would do that, until one night I discovered my neighbors secret.....

Apparently he would go out after dark, and drink beer (lots of beer) and well  water his lawn... right at the edge of mine. Apparently, moles don't like beer laced urine because they would not cross the line.

So, I'll be glad to come help you water the lawn if you supply the fuel

Dennis,

You're on! C'mon down. I try to keep plenty of stock on hand. This sounds like a major group effort. :D

Git-em George :!: I better come help out. I usually don't drink beer beer becuse after the second one I have to do a walk about every 20 minuts. Didn't know that was good for anything :!: Its a pain when you cannot get home from the bar without finding a gravel road

The moles will eventually win. I've used all those smoke bombs and things, but wound up followind "THE MOLE MAN'S" recipe.

http://www.themoleman.com/

"Trapping is the only effective method of control. It is literally a war of attrition." I bought 5 Macabee's Old Reliable traps. They will get the job done for you.

Moles No Mas :D

I had a mole that was just above the pool near my German Shorthair "Joe". Well the mole made a wrong turn in his tunnel and wound up in Joe's territory. It took Joe a bit to finally nose him out but he finally got his mole!!! Now all I have to do is fill in the Grand Canyon Joe dug getting to the little critter

Moles, interesting topic as the county including my property is infested with em - both the regular run of the mill mouse-sized mole and then there's the cat-sized rat mole - the ones that build those dang 1 foot high mounds.
Tried just about everything; rodent-smokers, traps, castor oil treatments, rodent repelling noise makers, etc. :(
Only two methods seem to work so far are:
dig up a fresh mound and when that rat mole sticks his head out for a look see my ol 12 ga. makes quick work of him.
The other is Duncan, my big rotty-shepard-mastiff (far as i can tell) mix dog. Every now and then he'll prance up to me with his trophy - a rat mole in mouth and waitin for his peanut butter cookie. :P
My neighbors swear by androus ammonia or piped-in exhaust fumes but the 12 ga. is more fun. That rodenator is intersting too.

George, sounds like you need to watch Caddy Shack! Nothing gets rid of moles like C-4.
I can relate to your problem, one year in addition to using carbide and the acet torch, I shot 22 of them with the trusty 12 guage. Elmer Fudd would have been weally, weally pwoud of me!

LiL'Red, great idea! .... calcium carbide, water and cannon fuse!
Another Caddy Shack moment!

Biologists have taken a number of Moles have disected them and found that earthworms were there main diet . Folks once thought that the grubs were the staple. Folks used pesticides on the grubs which also killed the earthworms. Hence the moles declined.
So George dig a few worms and GO fishing!
