Lowboy 185. Blowing air from carb

Hey yall I'm at a lose with my Lil tractor. She got in a flood so I pulled her down and cleaned and redone everything on her. Now she blows air out the carb and sucks air into the exhaust. I've reset the valves 2 times now so I know there good. There not sticking I made sure of that when I had the head off. I brought a new starter/generator. The manual says it's supposed to be clockwise from drivers end which it is. From the drivers end ot does turn. Clockwise. Popped the distributor cap off and the bug turns ccw which is again what the manual says. What am I missing here please help

Welcome.

Rereading your post. There are two starter/generators for Farmall Cub tractors and Cub Cadets. One turns clockwise and one turns counterclockwise. You have the wrong starter/generator.

When standing facing the front of the engine, engine turns clockwise.

Thank u everything I've read says clockwise from the drivers end that's what's got me stumped. Just like it says the bug should turn ccw from the drivers end which it does. It's a international cub service manual. There's a sticker on top of the starter/generator that says anti clockwise on it

Got me confused. What are "drivers"? Bug? And your reference, section number and page, on the CCW rotation for the "drivers".

As I indicated before, the starter/generator is turning-rotating your engine backwards.

Welcome to the forum. Now that you have 2 posts you can view/download info from the manuals located at the Quick links tab at the upper left corner of this page. Select pdf manuals from the drop down list, then browse and find what interests you. Since your 185 has the IH C60 engine, I suggest that you download and review the GSS 1012 service manual which covers both the J4 magneto and battery ignition systems. This will give you the information to service/maintain and repair the distributor used on your Number Series LoBoy 185 as well as a lot of other information about the electrical system. JMHO Stan

pull the valve cover, verify the valves go up and down correctly, seen a few where a keeper falls out

I'm assuming anti clockwise means counter clockwise.

Ad on Amazon for starter/generator for a 154. Read the ad. Says CW rotation, meaning clockwise rotation.

The valves are working correctly. Driver meaning the seat and bug referring to the rotor bug. I guess it's got me confused cause a normal engine spins over clockwise from behind the engine.

Lets start out with the engine revolutions. Most engines; tractors, cars, trucks, etc., rotate counterclockwise when viewed from the rear. Clockwise when viewed from the front of the engine. There are some cases where the engine is turned 180 degrees around in the frame and rotates clockwise when viewed from the rear. Kohler and Cub Cadets come to mind.

Driver's meaning depends on usage, not necessarily from the operator's seat. Look up the term. If utilized, the term usually means the end of the machine outputting the power.

Bug. Not sure I've ever heard the ignition rotor called a bug. And, I'm 80 years old. Been working on motors since I was a teenager and still do. Taught auto mechanics at the high school level and the technical college level. Any way, I'm pretty sure I know how a combustion engine works.

Like Eugene, I am a long time mechanic, never heard the rotor called a “bug”. Often hear it called “rotor button”, which I found annoying. It’s called a “distributor rotor”.
The very vast majority of automotive, tractor and industrial engines rotate counter clockwise when viewed from the flywheel end. The Cub is certainly in this group and has the flywheel at the rear of the engine, so, trust Eugene, you have the wrong starter/generator.

You have the wrong starter! You are trying to run the motor BACKWARDS and will destroy it if you keep doing that!!!! Get the right starter!!!!!!!

Ya I got her figured out. Everyone around as far back as I can remember has called it a rotor bug. Guess I just started calling it that from my grandfather who was a mechanic all his life as well as my uncles and dad. We do still call it that never had anyone ask what it was till this board

Think original poster is talking about terminology, not the engine rotating backwards.

I was lookin at the engine backwards

Sorry forgot to update yall. Ya I was lookin at the engine from the wrong direction plus had the distributor off by one gear turn when I put it back in. I wanna thank everyone for all the help I really appreciate everything I get taught

It sounds like your tractor’s engine timing might be off, which could cause the symptoms you're describing, like blowing air out the carb and sucking air into the exhaust. Even though you've set the valves correctly, if the camshaft and crankshaft are not properly timed with each other, it can cause this issue.
