Leaking Hydraulic Pump into Engine

It seems like my hydraulic pump is leaking hydraulic oil into my engine and the hydraulic reservoir is going empty, stopping the system from working. And the engine is filling up with oil. Where is a good source for what I assume are O-Rings and gaskets to repair this problem? Does anyone sell a "kit" of parts for this repair including the gasket on the oil reservoir for removing the oil line? Its on a 1958 or 1959 International Cub LoBoy with fasthitch.

Here is a pictorial on how to rebuild a touch control pump. A few things to keep in mind:

  • All parts must be thoroughly cleaned before re-assembling.
  • You must lubricate everything when putting it back together.
  • Make sure the hydro fluid gets into the pump from its lines before running the tractor.
  • Running the pump while dry will quickly ruin it.
  • The repair kits come with extra parts that will not be needed and the directions with the kits are not that good. They only cause confusion on where the parts go. Refer to the pictures here to get it done right.

Ok, I finally found the TM Tractor web site hidden at the bottom of the page, and ordered the pump rebuild kit from them.

Below is pump info, if you need it.
Only 2 of the 4 bolts in the Touch Control pump hold the pump onto the engine, the upper left, and lower right bolts, looking ahead from behind the pump.

The pump drive gear has a special lock washer on it, to keep the nut from coming off. One side of the washer is bent over 1 flat of the nut, straighten the washer to remove the nut, then rebend it when done repairing the pump. Sometimes the washer is broken, below is the listing at TM Tractor Parts for a new lock washer, and a picture from them of the pump drive gear and washer.

I have the rebuild kit on the way I hope. But ordering it Wednesday evening probably won't get it here very fast due to the holiday. Although my wife probably wouldn't have allowed me to work on it all day today anyway! So, now the Cub is stuck parked in front of the Shop in a non-runable condition since all the hydraulic oil filled up the engine about 2 quarts over the high level on the dip stick. And its probably not 10W-30 compatible oil anymore. So I don't want to start it until I get all the oil back out of it again. And I had just changed the engine oil and filter two weeks ago. And I am all out of Hy-Tran oil for the hydraulic system. Does this mean I don't have to put the trash dumpsters out this week since I don't have the Cub to pull the trailer? I will review everybody's recommendations before I do the rebuild after the parts get here. Where does everyone get new jugs of Hy-Tran compatible with a Cub? Or is there an equivalent compatible hydraulic oil available somewhere?

Case IH dealers sell Hy-Tran fluid. If the dealer in your area will let you buy things over the phone with a credit card, they might also ship it to you. A 1 gallon can will fill the system 2 times.
There are other brands, they have said on here NAPA sells one. Read on the can and be sure it works with IH hydraulic systems before buying it.
 
I get mine at Tractor supply.
Drain the oil out, get the rebuild kit and you'll be fine. Been there very frustrating.
Question I have is it a leak or did you blow it? The Cub hydraulic system isn't the most robust and a little bit more force on it that it is designed for will blow it. Previous owner had welded an arm that extended the length of my rear lift arm by about 8". Well when running the plow that extra length added enough torque that it blew my pump several years ago.
 
In response to ShawnAgne, I am not sure what the characteristics are of a "blow it" condition? I have not used the lift for anything heavy duty lately. It has a Woods 59" mower deck mounted on it, usually all the time. So, the only usual pick up is when I hook up the trash hauling trailer on the fast hitch in the rear. And I can pick up the trailer tongue with one hand. Although I usually just back under it and pick in up with the hitch and get down to latch it on. And now it appears the pump has been leaking slowly for a little while. But just getting worse lately, draining enough hydraulic oil out of the reservoir to stop it from working properly. And what fails in the hydraulic pump when it "blows"? And how many hours of run time on a Cub wears the pump seals out? Seems like I just replaced them 25 years ago? It is a working tractor on the farm, running 8 or 10 hours every week in the summer time mowing grass. But only 4 or 5 hours every week in the winter time hauling trash out to the road (1/4 mile away) and cutting and hauling fire wood for the furnace from back in the woods.
 
Thanks Don for the info on the MS-1207 or MS-1209 Hy-Tran compatible oils. I just finished up the last jug of real Hy-Tran I bought from the local HI/Case dealer and it seems to me that it must have been gold in that jug?

I buy mine from tsc. Universal premium I believe it’s called. It’s compatible, check label. I’ve used it for years with no issues
 
Well, I took a ride up to Tractor Supply Company since it is the closest source for this kind of stuff to me, and I have a farm account with them, and purchased a 2 gallon jug of the recommended Universal Premium hydraulic oil. I read all the fine print on the back of the container before purchasing, and see that it is MS-1207 and MS-1209 Hy-Tran compatible. Now I am waiting for that pump rebuild kit to show up. Not in the mail today. I should have stopped and bought a jug of engine oil also so I can drain and change all of that at the same time. Do you think the hydraulic oil in the engine will damage that engine oil filter since I just put a new one in a couple of weeks ago? Otherwise I can just pull the engine oil pan drain plug and the filter drain cap? And then put in new engine oil?
 
I had to go to WalMart this morning for some grocery supplies for our diverted in-home Thanksgiving turkey dinner tomorrow, and picked up a new jug of engine oil. But no pump parts were in the mail this afternoon. And the Cub is sitting out in the rain/snow now. So no taking it apart today.
