Kerosene in a diesel tractor?

Anybody ever run kerosene in a diesel tractor? The Ford is a 4630, it has a mechanical injection pump. I assume I need to add some sort of additive like automatic transmission fluid or marvel mystery oil in the kero for lubrication.

I have about 125 gallons of kerosene sitting and with fuel prices going up and the shortage, why not use it?

My gut tells me you would be better off to mix it with some diesel fuel, but I can't back that up with data! I'd do some investigating before I did it.

Understood. Can't help with that. I have a kero fired torpedo heater. I've often wondered if diesel would work acceptably in it. Haven't got the answer I'm looking for, yet.

I know people who have done that with no problems

Kerosene is about 150% higher priced per gallon than diesel.

There is a shortage of kerosene.

Suggest selling it and buying diesel.

Might be smart to hang on to the kerosene for a while since the price is bound to go up.

This was free, I don't have any use for it other than starting a brush pile fire.

125 gallons times $6- a gallon =s - - that's more money than I would throw on wood to start brush pile fires.

I use waste engine oil to start brush pile fires.

That's why I want to run it in my tractor, if I'm gonna burn it, I'd rather run it through an engine :D

My brother has burned off road diesel in a torpedo heater.

It is a bit more smelly!

Supposedly kerosene does not have the lubricity as diesel, but since the feds have mandated the sulphur be mostly removed from the diesel, which removed most of the lubricity of the diesel.

Supposedly stuff like Howes Diesel treatment adds lubricity.

I have not conducted labatory testing, but have used the Howes stuff

Years ago, kerosene and #1 heating oil, and #1 diesel were the same. When K-1 kerosene came along, it was a purer grade fuel for use in heaters and such. I think the further refining removed most if it’s lubricity. If I were thinking of running it in my tractors, I’d definitely add a lubricant. I’m not offering advice on the matter, though.

My uncle used to add a couple of gallons to the tractors on the farm when it gets cold. To prevent it from gelling up. Bear in mind if you don't add enough lubricant to the kerosene you will destroy your injection pump. As there is none in the kero. My point is do the research and be careful
