Well, I was having the time of my life dragging the horse arena when it just died. I was in third and zipping around when it died - I tried restarting the wee cub multiple times and it sputtered like it could not get fuel. Maybe would run at low idle for 20-30 seconds. Would die when I tried to up the throttle. The fuel tank is more than 1/4 full. The bowl looks full too. It was darker outside when this happened, so she slept outside and I will see if the carb is getting fuel this evening after work. May have some crud in there - we will see.

Battery cables are tight.
I removed the fuel cap to check for vacuum - but that didn't make a difference.
Fuel is pretty new and ethanol free. Same fuel that I have been running for the last two weeks without issue.
Then I went to bed.
 
Mine did the same thing to me a while back. Was running fine, then suddenly just died in my yard. Would restart but ran crummy and stalled out. Some junk got into the fuel bowl and was obstructing the fuel flow. Once I flushed that out it started up and ran fine.
 
Judging by the fact that, you were zipping around your arena, in 3rd. gear, having the time of your life, I would suspect that some trash in your fuel tank may have made it’s way to the tank outlet, blocking it. Try shining a flash light into the tank opening and see if you see any such thing. Otherwise, remove the carb main jet and do a fuel flow test, also look closely at the main jet, they do get plugged pretty easily.
 
Thank you all for the responses. When I arrived home last night from work I started at the top and worked my way down. The fuel tank is clean and new looking - free of any sinkers/floaters. The bowl under the tank did have something in it - I drained that and flushed it. I then drained the bowl on the carb and flushed that out. After that - it was perfect. It must have been something in there as you all mentioned. I was worried it was something more... Thanks again!

Let that be a bitter lesson when you've having the time of your life.

Congrats on sorting it out.

I keep a wire wrapped near the carb on each tractor to use on the main jet when I get a conked out tractor wanting fuel.
(More so in winter.)
So now that I'm prepared it usually isn't the main jet any more.
