Installing pto shaft

Trying to install pto shaft and having trouble while trying to line up the shifter lever with the shifter clutch. Manual says remove filler plug and use for inspection hole. I’ve tried and tried to line this up but can’t see it. Is there anyway to tell if I have this hooked up or any trick in how to hook it up

I use a good light, and look in through the filler plug hole, it is easy to see the shifter pin, and the clutch.
If it won't fit together, I have found that I need to remove the bolt holding the PTO shifter guide onto the gearshift cover, then the PTO lever can go farther ahead. This lets the pin move farther to the rear.
When reassembling, tighten the bolt gently, it is small.
The PTO pilot bushing, in the end of the clutch shaft, needs to be good also. :)
 
Struggled with it a week ago myself. Like they say, light through the fill hole and that is where I did the lining up...and let loose the shifter for more play to get it on the spindle. PITA.

Make sure the big gasket on the back plate is good...or it will leak
 
The more you do it, the easier it gets. I would suggest doing it two or three times while you have it apart to get the hang of it. I’ve even been able to do it by feel, but I always double check by looking in filler hole. But first time I did it was a pain. Lol
 
Well I went out and looked at it again and to me it seems impossible. I did remove the plate so the shifter would have more play. To make sure I understand the pin has to go into the groove in the clutch. I will attempt again
 
Okay I think I got it I can see the clutch move back and forth when I move the shifter. Time will tell. On a related note if anyone needs the bronze bushing let me know. To get one I had to buy seven and hope I don’t have to do it again

Good that you got it put together.
If you bought bushings somewhere in bulk, check the PTO and be sure it turns easily in the bushing.
Put it in 1st gear, with the engine off, and the PTO disengaged. The PTO shaft should turn easily using your hand.
I don't know if the info you had said, the ID of the bushing, and front end of the PTO shaft should be greased before putting the PTO in. :)
