Information on rewinding 6 volt starter for 12 volt.

I know the 6 volt starter works fine on the 12 volt system, my Cub starter works great on 12 volt. I always wanted to change the fields or rewind something so a 6 volt started would be converted to a 12 volt starter. I did have pictures and instructions on how to do this but a computer crash lost it. Would anyone have this info or be able to tell where to find it? I tried on line but all they want to tell me is how to convert a 6 to 12 volt system. Also why can't we buy or build a converter to change the 12 volt to 6 volt before it gets to the starter?

I was under the impression most folks just ran the 6V starter on 12V without any issues. Personally, I’ve not done the conversion but I have jumped my Cub with 12V many times and I’d spins over nicely :).

Yes that is correct, I am running a 6 volt starter on my Cub converted to 12 volt. Yes it works fine. I just wanted to build a 12 volt starter to replace the 6 volt starter.

6-v is history!!! never worked that great in the 50's---always had to jump it with 12-v on cars/trucks/tractors/dozers/etc. ---best thing they ever did was to stop supporting it!!

My old man seemed to have to had to buy a 6v battery about every other year. Wouldn’t start worth a hoot in the cold. Same tractor with the same 6v starter has started in 15 below zero with a 12v battery. Best thing ever happened was to ditch 6v system.
Put new brushes in the 6v starter and rock on with 12v. It’s a way better starter than the 12v starters.

It may be feasible and possible but not cost effective or practical is what a starter rebuild shop told me. A 6v starter operated on 12v will last a LONG time, just make sure it's in good mechanical/electrical condition and don't just let it run for more than 4 or 5 seconds at the time. JMHO Stan

I have never had a problem with any of my 6v tractors.
Me either with my one. 6v started many tractors and cars for years. I would consider it if I had a generator problem and did not have a 6v charger. Might as well go to 12v completly. Just putting 12v battery in would give quite a jump in voltage thru the coil and a hotter spark when starting. I can see why it would start. The only tractor I would convert from 6v to 12v would be a Super M. Just my thinking but to each his own. Vern
