Hydraulic oil in engine

The hyd pump is leaking into the engine. I really don’t want to tear it down until spring incase we get more snow. Will it hurt the engine with the hydraulic fluid in it?

In my opinion, a small amount will do no harm but why not get the parts on hand, then when you have a couple hours available, do the fix. It’s not a big job and can easily be done in a short evening.
Yes I am going to order parts. But it’s just a busy time for me, and it’s cold. 🙂

The problem with hydraulic fluid in the engine is that in most cases the viscosity is somewhere around 10 and it doesn’t have the additive package that motor oils do.

You could just drain the old hydraulic fluid out and oil out, and just put engine oil in both for a temporary fix. That way if it leaks into the engine, it won't really harm anything. Kind of a band-aid fix, but it's an option.

I've never replaced the seal by the pump before, but it doesn't look like a terribly difficult job. Your hydraulic unit might be fine and not need a rebuild. Might just need to replace the seal by the pump.

I did the one in my 65 a few years back. Not terribly difficult. The nut lock washer can be a problem if it has broken ears.

Jim Becker has said on here to not put engine oil in a Touch Control.
Case IH Hy-Tran fluid is thin hydraulic fluid.
Some motor oils are too thick for a hydraulic system in winter.

I know you're not supposed to do that, but lots of people do it and it doesn't seem to hurt anything from what I've read. Straight 30wt would probably be too thick.

I run the hy-tran fluid in mine. Even with that in there, when I first start the tractor up and it's really cold outside, the hydraulics move a little slow at first. After using them for a little bit they warm up and get back to normal. I don't notice this when it's warmer out (i.e. 30 degrees or so or above).

I have no problem viewing Bob’s link on an iPad with current iOS.
I don’t have a problem with the link itself. Problem is clicking on a pic does not enlarge it. Gives the message Peter posted
Of course, you can enlarge the whole page and make it legible

Same here, link works using iPhone 16.
On my laptop with Windows 11 using Google browser, when clicking on the images, it gives the message Peter S. posted.
