How, and with whom, do you insure your tractor?

I've been looking into insuring my Cub and so far have not found the ideal package. My antique jeep insurer JC Taylor will insure it but has a specific clause forbiding snowplowing, which is one reason I have the Cub, to plow my driveway and the street (private development) in front of the house. Homeowner's covers it but only on the property. As soon as I go off the end of the driveway it's not covered. My auto insurance covers it while being towed but I also want coverage while at a show so we're back to JC Taylor. I didn't expect putting a plow blade up front would create such a hassle. Anybody found the perfect solution (at a reasonable price)? I'm beginning to think maybe I should just keep plowing with the family 4Runner and sell the L54. :?

What do you consider a reasonable premium? I'd suggest self-insuring by paying that to yourself each month. Set the money aside in a tractor fund. You can seed the fund with a few hundred bucks and then let it build. Once you've accumulated enough to pay for an overhaul or a replacement cub, freeze the fund. If liability while you are off your property is an issue, an umbrella policy can take care of that.

Mine is through my homeowners insurance. Just a rider as part of my main policy (Farm bureau). If I remember correctly (occasionally happens) it is about $35 every 6 months for 3 cubs and the H. I keep it as much for the liability as for the price of the tractors.

One of the near by tractor clubs offers insurance in their membership fees. Not sure what the insurance covers besides tractor events. Worth checking into.

If you own an acreage or a farm, check with your insurance agent. They should be able to cover farm machinery for liability. Other insurance policies should cover medical expenses.

Losing a $1500- $2000- tractor in an accident is very small change compared to potential damages to the other party. Basically, I wouldn't insure the tractor, only my liability incase of an accident.

Yeah, that's essentially what I'm looking for, liability insurance. That's something you just can't self insure. Homeowners covers it while on the property, auto insurance while being towed, and Taylor would while at a show but I haven't found anything that'll cover it while plowing snow on the street in front of the house.

John, does Farm Bureau cover you off property?

OK, I looked up the PA Farm Bureau and it appears their insurances are covered by Nationwide, at least here in PA. Is that who underwrites yours? I see they do have a liability umbrella policy available.

The insurance through a lot of tractor clubs will barely let you take it out of the shed. Talk to your agent and see what you can add to your existing homeowners, etc. policy.

That's all news to me. It was a head slapping moment, but like who'd ever think of insuring the snowblower or lawn mower? A Tractor is just a bigger version of the same thing... isn't it? Perhaps it's just our litigious society run a muck.

I've never even thought of insuring mine.

Haven't asked my dad but he's been insuring all his farm equipment for a variety of things for a while now. Never had a claim but a friend (who first told him about the company and their coverage) had the wobble box fall OFF of his header during soybean harvest one year. The company totalled the header out and gave him a check. I was surprised they covered what amounted to a breakdown due to wear and tear (the header was older than dirt) but I think their particular policy covers all grades of disaster, liability, etc. etc.

We never thought about it years ago, but when you consider how much a new tractor costs, and how much electrical wiring (that can short out and burn all that sound deadening insulation, plastic hood, fenders, and fuel tanks) it makes sense.

While trying to find insurance for a tractor ride and a tractor display at the local county fair, I found out that it would be covered by my farm owners Insurance policy for whatever the limits were on the policy that was for parades, displays, tractor rides, etc.

I got the certificate of insurance from the agency it all was good

It may be tough because plowing the road is likely considered a commercial enterprise, even if you don't get paid.

One thing that might "lubricate" the process is to use the term "compact tractor" when talking about your Cub. Compact tractors are quite common anywhere there are places with a little bit of acreage.

If you are a member of a local tractro club check with the president or secretary. Our club has liability insurance that covers the members for any shows or activities the club participates in.
