Hole in gas can

I have several 2 gallon plastic gas cans that I use with the Cubs. One was left outside while I was at the Bash as I didn't have time to empty it into the tank. Yesterday when I went to do that, there was a 1 1/4" hole chewed in the top opposite the spout. I'm guessing it was a rabbit, but am surprised one would do that.

I am too. I would have thought the fumes/smell of a partially filled gas can would have deterred most animals.

Do you have groundhogs or skunks?

No groundhogs; I haven't seen or smelled a skunk out here in about 10 years. No cattle, it was just outside the horse barn.

I’d bet my money on a squirrel. They did a bunch of damage to my neighbors 4 wheeler. They chewed up the gas cap and vent hose. They also chewed up the plastic air filter box, seat, and numerous wires. They got in the loft of my shed and chewed up several dozen plastic duck decoys. I have no use for tree rats.

We do have several small squirrels, so they are probably the culprit. I hope it stuck it's tongue into the gas for a taste....

Good luck with your new gas cans. Hope you can find one that isn't a safety spout.
Maybe you might get lucky and find one with a similar sized neck where you could move your existing spout to the new can.

How about a pic of this subject gas can?

Not that any of us could tell what done it, but it sure would be interesting to see!

Hard to believe any animal would bother something like that with such a strong smell!

Twice now living near old farms they have a rat problem. At one place my dog slept on the roof of the dog house. While working nights at 3am my headlights caught the rats running the stone wall on that farm. At the horse farm near me at the new house the rats chewed into the wooden crack corn storage bin feed for the chicken. He put out those rat trap bins.

Luckily I have outside killer cats. Nothing is safe I’m lucky there not bigger. I haven’t had rats but the new place had mice. From being vacant for a while.

squirrels , rats, mice and voles will chew on anything! AND sadly plastic is their fav. next to trailer wiring.
