Group 19L Battery Availability

Original 6 V system. I presently have a Group 1 battery but as you probably all know these are little large for the battery box. I've looked everywhere for a Group 19 without success. I'm in the Seattle/Tacoma area and have access to many automotive and battery stores - nothing's available. Has anyone bought one recently?

I have a 6V Group 1 Diehard from Advanced Auto in my 1957 Cub, bought earlier this year. Fits tight, but no problem with the lid on - with the factory rubber hold downs.
9 1/8" length x 7 1/8" width x 9 3/8" height.

Group 19L: 8 1/4" length x 6 3/4" width x 7 1/2" height.

I wonder what a factory installed battery measured?

I get my batteries at an Interstate battery store near home in SE Pennslyvania. The owner of the store told me a year or two ago that he can no longer get Group 19 batteries from Interstate.

My local Advance Auto shows one in their Portland warehouse. Either it will be here tomorrow or I'll get a call saying they didn't really have it.

If you want a battery with twice the cranking amps, will last 3 times longer and not have acid corrosion/explosion issues, than I recommend an Optima.
It's about 10 bucks more than a 19L and a bungee strap works well for a hold down.

Hi,
I have used group 1 batteries from NAPA in my Cub, and they fit normally, the top goes on the battery box with no problem. I am in Wa.
Maybe your Cub has a replacement battery box that is a slightly different size, just an idea. :)

Nope, it's been a long standing issue that not all Group 1 batteries are created equal.

Some manufacturers make them larger than their original spec. Perhaps that has to do with being able to use a stock case for multiple different battery sizes, rather than having a special case for each size.

That was the situation with my Group 1. It just didn't fit. I finally found a 19L via Advance Auto.

The 19L battery was used in all type1 (bug) and ghia VWs 1966 and older. It came with a cap over the + terminal because the seat springs were right over the top.
