Grill Emblem

Hey guys.
I haven’t been on here in several years but have a new project and looking for some input. The new project is a BN, I picked up from a neighbor who started the restoration and didn’t finish it, so I bought it in pieces. I have it mostly put back together and am looking at some detail stuff now, and that’s why I’m posting this question in the “A” forum, because there’s a lot more As that you have restored than there are B/BN.

My question is about the grill “Farmall” emblem. 1, vertical placement? It looks to me like the screws should be drilled just above the seam at the top of the grill before the nose of the grill turns to the hood, but I’ve seen several where the emblem is fully below this seam. Where is the correct location?

2. The emblem I got from Steiner’s is more “wedge” shaped, and the top/bottom lips of the emblem hit first near the ridge in the grill and do not allow the ends of the emblem (where the screw holes are) down to touch the grill. I thought maybe you just torque down the screws and it would pull it down, but it seems pretty far. Then I wondered about marking the top/bottom pieces of the emblem with a pencil and grinding the excess metal down to let the edges and screw holes down at least closer to the grill. Has anyone else run into this?

I couldn't tell you where on the vertical it's exactly supposed to go, but I can attest to the Steiner emblems not exactly being shaped to the grill. Here is my Super A. The new one has "wings" because the radius of the emblem doesn't match the curve of the "hump" like the old one. You might have to do a little flexing or shimming for a snug fit

Here are some pics. The picture with dialog is out of the Farmall Letter Series Book. The other two are of my 1947 A. I did have to do some tweeking and fitting with tin snips to make it fit better. We need a pic of your project. Dennis

It needs to be high enough to cover the seam but not much more. The pictures from Dennis K look about right. The one posted by Don looks like it may be just a bit low. While fitting it, keep in mind that the fit will change as it is moved up or down. How it fits can also change depending on what history the grill has of being bent and straightened. The screws that hold the emblem are another detail to look at. Dennis K used the right style (countersunk heads). Note the picture he posted from the book. It has the wrong type screws.

Thanks everyone. So, after much research and your input today, I decided to try it aligned with the top edge right in the seam. That seemed to fit really well with almost no trimming, just a little sanding in a few spots. Drilled two new holes and it pulled right into place. I’ll try to post some pics in the B/BN forum so everyone can see the progress. Unfortunately, I’m traveling for the next several weekends so I’m probably stalled on the project until later this fall. I’m almost there too, just need to finish the wiring harness, fuel line, and choke and starter rods. Oh well, it will be there when I can get to it.
