Governor Disassembly-Rebuild

Hi there,

I need to pull off the governor and rebuild it or just get it working at least. I looked in the manuals and I didn't see a disassembly guide. Is there one floating around out there?

Right, now I am having a hard time figuring out how to disassembly the rock shaft does it come apart or do I need to detach the rock shaft and the governor as one whole piece?

If you remove the two bolts that hold the rockshaft bracket onto the engine cover, and remove the pin connecting the carb rod to the rockshaft, (on the left side under the air cleaner) you should be able to pull the rockshaft to the left out of the governor. (unless it has been JB Weld-ed into the arm there!)

That was from a real quick search, and someone with more info should be along!! Good luck!

Hi,
The linkage on the outside of the governor needs checking and adjusting before taking the governor off the engine. It can make a real difference in how the governor works. The governor might still be good inside.
At least one man lately on here was having trouble with his Cub, and he found the linkage was set wrong.
Leave the part on the governor that the throttle rod on top of the governor attaches to, and just take the throttle rod off it. Make sure it moves freely on the pin, some of them get tight, they need lubing, :)

I agree with Glen. Make sure to you go through all of the carb/ governor adjustments before you take it off. In my experience very rarely is anything wrong with the inside of the governor.

What make you think the governor is a problem?

Well, the spring rockshaft assembly is loose and when you pull the throttle there is little chance flexibility, its all or nothing.
Also, I noticed the governor gasket is falling apart so I figured I should pop it off and put a new gasket on at minimum, seams like getting the governor adjusted is a bit tedious, do you think I can replace the gasket without having to do to much alterations or I might as well rebuild it now?

Does anyone know a place I can order a rebuilt one already done and send my old one in exchange? I did that for my magneto a few years back. I forgot where I did it.

If I could just get it working now I would be happy to avoid changing the gasket out, the main gasket connecting the governor to the engine block looks broken. The governor was seizing up last winter, I think maybe it is not being lubricated if the gasket is not sealing. I would prefer to do this adjusting. I cant identify the linkage piece you are indicated here, the problem I think is the spring assembly connecting to the rockshaft assembly is loos and wiggles freely. This seams to be the main problem, I cant identify how to tighten this spring assembly securing to the rockshaft. But I haven't figured out if this is the main problem either.

Ok! So, this picture is from a previous post, but this little guy is loose on the rockshaft, how do you tigthen this thing down? I tried seeing if an allen screw would fit in through that little hole but its looks like that isn't the case. Is this thing supposed to sit loose on the rockshaft or be tightened snug?

The shaft the goes into the left sideof that piece, as Bob states, has a key but the opposite side on the right where it goes on the governor shaft, is held on with a roll pin. I had an engine last month, that was missing that roll pin, allowing the lever to rotate freely on the shaft.

Thr governor appears to be in correct 8 and 2 o clock when at cylinder 1 TDC. So i suspect the governor adjustments will be fine. I'll post pone measing with a gov rebuild for now but I'll let you know how it goes after the adjustmentments.

My governor gave me a fit. I took it apart and cleaned it adjusted every thing by the book. Still didn't work. Took it apart again checked key for slipping it wasn't. Put it back together still didn't work. Took it apart the third time put it back the same way I did the other two times and it worked perfect. So I don't have clue what was wrong with it. Good Luck

It seems like I may need to do this soon. Right Now I am trying to get the mag retimed and I am having a hell of a time for some reason, its been a couple years since I timed it last. Once I get this thing running I hope to follow all the governor adjustments as stated by the manual. I deffinately think something with the key is wrong here...
