gear shift lever on lowboy cub

The gearshift lever on Mr. Jesse (my lowboy cub) started just spinning the other day and I could not figure out what had happened. Then I noticed a hole in the front of the cup or cover in the front where the lever goes into the transmission case. It feels as if there is a notch where a pin or something went in and locked it in position. Feels like threads but I can't find a screw or bolt to fit it. Can't find anything about it in the manual. Could some of you experts tell me what is to go in there? Thanks,

Billy Ray

Hey BR, I had a FCub shifter to do this. I removed the trans cover and found the inside cup under the trans cover had come loose from the shifter. I removed the shift knob, roll pins and spring so the shift lever will come out the bottom of the cover and reattached the inside cup to the shift lever by welding it to the lever then reassembled the lever to the trans cover. This fixed my problem.

BR, its been awhile since I had the curved shifter apart but it has an extra locating pin to keep the shifter from spinning, a different setup from the regular straight up shifter that will spin if you try hard enough. Take the curved shifter apart the same way as the regular and you'll see the broken culprit giving you fits. Then you'll see if the cup broke lose or the pin fell out.

Sounds like your pin fell out, as described by Rick Prentice. I believe the pin was originally pressed into the cover. I had one come loose years ago. I believe I brazed it back in, has been fine since.

that is what happened. My pin has fell out and I couldn't find out what had been in the hole and how it was fastened. Tried all manners of roll pins but none fit. Anyone know where I could find one or what I could substitute.

BR, The parts list calls for a 3/16 x 1 1/2" roll pin. If you can't find that size, you could possibly use 3/16" rod and stake/tack weld it on both ends to hold it in place.

I saw that parts list but a 3/3 pin is too big and about 1 and 1/8 " too long. I think I will have to customize a rod and tack it. Thanks for the help, guys.

Bob,
I think BR is missing a different part than the roll pin. That roll pin holds the swivel on shift levers without the welded swivel. The missing part goes into the "gear shift lever housing" and keeps the "gear shift lever swivel" from rotating. It appears that the missing part is 364 066 R1.

According to all the pics it had to fall in not out so it's in there someplace. You may have to remove the back cover. Sometimes small stuff travels through the bottom holes leading into the diff area. It'd be disasterous once the oil gets thick from cooler weather and that piece of steel gets carried up between two gears.

^^^^^^^^This. You can also take one of those small extendable magnets and try to get it into the bottom of the transmission and fish it out. I wouldn't drive it without finding that pin.

Just to confuse things, here are the details on the loose one I had.

It was already loose when I got the tractor. Shortly after buying it, I noticed some friction tape wrapped around the tower. When I took the tape off, out came that pin. So I took things apart, brazed the pin back in and it has been fine since.

What I do know: The pin came out. The pin didn't fall inside.

What I don't know: Was my pin the original or a substitute? Did my original pin fall inside and is it still there?

I have never had another one apart to get a good look at an original pin.

looking at the drawing, I don't see how it could fall inside. Am I missing something? I am planning on getting a short bolt that fits the groove firmly and welding the head of the bolt to the it goes in.
