Gear oil level

Hi - Does anyone know where the gear oil level plug is on a 1953 Farmall cub? I've seen websites showing a square head bolt on the left side of the case but I don't have one. The fill (behind the stick) and drain at the bottom are obvious but there is nothing else. Can the level be checked from the fill port? Thanks

It is on the left side near the cast code. Make sure yours hasn't been replaced with something else.

Hi Thanks - Unfortunately mine has been altered/removed. See picture. Do you think I can measure from the fill port down to this level and then use a dip-stick to get an approximate fill level? Is it bad to overfill? Thanks

Are you sure it hasn't just been painted in? Easy to do with such a small plug in a location that's difficult to access.

Not sure you could get past the transmission gears with a dipstick. And problem I see with overfilling is that the differential seals often leak when the fluid level is too high (above the seal level).

Drain the transmission. It probably has some water in it anyway. Refill with 3.5 PINTS of gear oil. Then you know it’s correct.

Are the numbers in your casting code reversed or is the photo reversed? It looks like the plug may be sheared off. You may be able to drill it out and replace it.

Thanks, All. The numbers are reversed since I took the picture through a mirror. I like the idea of draining and refilling but Don, do you mean 3.5 quarts? In the spec sheet (see photo) it mentions quarts

Hi,
The table you posted above has mistakes. They are saying quarts, and it should be pints.
Below is a page from the 1950 Cub owner's manual showing the capacities.

I have changed and filled the transmissions, and final drives, they use pints, like the manuals say.
Maybe you could tell the place you got the table that it has mistakes.

It looks like in your pic, the plug would be at the other end of the date code, if it is like the housing in Barnyard's pic above, I'm not sure. :)

Since you have to get under the tractor to get to the transmission drain plug, left side of the tractor, just a bit higher than the drain plug, other end on the date code.
