Gear Lube Replacement

I wish to replace the oil in the transmission and final drives after many years of sitting, but I am wondering if I should wait until I have it running in order to circulate the old oil before draining. Also, should I flush them with kero or diesel before adding new gear oil? I don’t plan to go into either the trans or the final drives absent any indication of a problem. Additionally, does the tranny and final drives require different lubricants? Thanks

A diesel or kerosene flush will be more effective if the tractor can be driven. The need for that will depend on the condition of the oil that is in the tranny now. The same gear oil can be used for both the tranny and finals.

to what Bob said :D

I use kerosene mostly because I have it in quantity and when I drain it, I can filter it and reuse it. It really helps as Bob said to drive the tractor around so the kerosene or diesel gets slung around inside a lot washing the gears and sides down. Might take a flush or two to get it really clean depending on how gunky it is.

The Owner's Manuals have a section on Lubrication including the Lube charts:

If you are not planning on moving the tractor for several days. Just drain and let drain for several days, the transmission/differential and finals.

My preference is to just replace the gear lub with your choice of lubricants. Drive the tractor around for a while - then drain and replace. Do a couple of quick lub changes.

Where does one get cream separator oil, as recommended for the magneto impulse coupling?
Auto parts store. Ask for the machine oil that comes with the extendable plastic spout. The extendable tubing/spout makes easy work of oiling the generator, etc.. 3 in 1 or Zoom are a couple of brand names.
