Gasket sealer yes/no?

Hi all, new here with a recently purchased 48' Cub. As seems to be typical near every seal and gasket has some leakage. None of it seems to be rocket science for repair so I'll be diving into all that shortly. Main question for know is should I use a gasket sealer on any of the new gaskets and they're mating surface or not. On any of such videos I've seen and manuals on this there's no mention of it or shown being used. Thought maybe the oil pan should have some but maybe not since they all seem to be the cork/oil combo material. Any thoughts welcomed. Regards, Kevin

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your newly acquired '48 cub. Most of the comments in the past that I've seen suggest using a sealer with the gaskets replacement. Special situations like the head and radiator gasket deserve some additional attention. Coppercote or Indian Head for the head gasket and Permatex Aviation gasket sealer for the radiator and head bolts come to mind. Others will probably come along with suggestions. JMHO Stan
EDIT: There's lots of tips and tricks in the HOW TO Forum for most of the problems that you'll deal with as you work on your Cub. Please check it out!!

I use Loctite Form a Gasket on both sides of the gasket on parts I don't expect to take apart normally; oil pan, water outlet, etc. Use it on the block side and grease on the tin side on parts I expect to remove of time to time; valve cover, brake covers etc.

Welcome aboard! Check for flat mounting surfaces on the oil pan. Those tend to get wavy from over tightening. Try to flatten them out as much as possible and I'd suggest a good gasket sealer.

Ricky, funny you mentioned that. First lookover when I got it home I saw where someone had overtorqued the oil pan bolts and deformed it some. Got a new pan for it already. Was oil leaking around the pan but that may be coming from the governor/ magneto seals/gaskets. I had Super A some years ago so some similarities here. Thanks all for the responses! Looks like I'll be using sealer on a lot of them.
