Gas cap leaking

I have been using my 52 on somewhat ruff flat ground. I'm quite sure it is the original gas cap. I have a new gasket on the cap but the cap still drips gas allot when going over ruff spots even when the tank is only half full. Is this normal? I don't remember that happening when I used the SA my dad had a few years ago.

Hi,
There shouldn't be any gas splash out the gas cap when using the Cub.
The surface the cap seals to on the gas tank should be even and not bent.
If it's bent gas can splash out.
It's not safe to use the Cub if gas is splashing out onto the outside of the tank.
The gasket material needs to be the right thickness, so the cap turns sort of hard on the tank surface.

There may be another issue: I recall at a Cub Fest years ago, a man had a tool to correct fit of the cap to the tank . He turned it manually to make a good fit. Seems it was quite popular with the Cub owners at the event. Maybe someone else can chime in about this.

I have the repair tool here in Cincinnati. Maybe you can make it to the CubTug in July or to my next CubFest in October.

I ordered the replacement cap before posting my question. The cap I have turns on firmly with the new gasket but it still leaks. The opening looks to be flat but I will check it out tomorrow with a flat edge. I would like to come to a CubFest but weekends this summer are already booked solid.

I had the same issue. I got a free cap from IH and it no longer leaks now. Hopefully that's all you need.

Where's it leaking? Around the base? Through the vent hole?

The tall updated cap will fix leaking through the vent. You may need to have the neck of the tank reformed if it's leaking around the base of the cap.

I found that the top of the lip that the seal rest on had a couple of spots that had been welded at the factory and not smoothed off well. A little careful filing to flatten the top and all is well.
