fuel leak

I have a leak at the gas tank on my model 73 where the sediment bowl threads into the bottom of the tank. Is there any sort of sealant, tape, etc. that can be placed on the threads to prevent this? Thanks for your assistance. My wife says I can't put it into the garage until it no longer smells strongly of gasoline.

you better examine the bottom of that tank and make sure the solder joint to the fitting isn't leaking or there's cracks in the metal. people have a tendency to over tighten them and that can cause the problems above. Get a 1/8" male pipe plug and install that with Teflon tape and use hot water to check for leaks after you remove the tank. ! forgot to mention rust pin holes also. It leaks and runs along the tank to the fitting. Good luck
 
If you use the teflon tape dont use any color but Yellow. The yellow is designated for use with Gas & Solvents.
 
On my 107 Fuel tank, the little fuelcock that you turn on the sediment bowl that shuts the fuel off to the engine leaks when the valve is screwed in (off). It does not leak while it is screwed out and the fuel is on. How do i fix this? It's not really a problem, but still, i'd like to be able to shut my fuel off without the dripping that occurs once i do.
 
Tighten the compression nut on the stemshaft. This will compress the packing a little and should stop the leak.
 
That packing is leather if it is an original one, and does break down. You can remove the stem (unscrew the brass packing nut and screw the stem out), cut the remains of the leather packing off an use 1 or 2, 1/8" "O" rings as replacement. I use "O" rings bought in the plumbing section of Lowes (little plastic box of 25 or so) and have not had one leak yet.
 
Thank you both for the info. After about 7 months i started to think that gasoline dripping on the coil might not be such a great thing. :wink:
 
Hey Ritter...I had a small bottom seam leak in my Model 73 gas tank. After removing the tank and locating the leaky seam...I was able to carefully clean off the paint down to bare metal and use JB Quick Weld to patch the seam. Worked like as charm...still going strong! :wink:
