Front axle

Is the grease fitting for the spindles in the front or back? My 72 is in back and the 49 is in front.

Does it matter?

Hi,
If you are talking about the 2 vertical tubes that the spindle shafts are inside of, they both have grease fittings, the fitting on one side faces ahead, the fitting on the other side faces to the rear.
I think they were that way on all years of Cubs, but not totally sure.

Below is a page from the 1950 Cub owner's manual showing the places to lube. It only shows the fitting on one spindle tube, at number 3, but says both sides.

I've never seen them that way as you are describing. We had a 1949 Cub, and the fittings pointed forward and back.
All the other Cubs I've seen, the fittings faced both ways.

Maybe the guys with many Cubs have seen them both facing the same way.

the spindle housings were the same for left and right except that they were turned the opposite way to install so that is why the fittings face in opposite directions

That was my thought also. Same part for both sides. Someone must have drilled them to match facing forward and rearward after a grease zerk was broken off. If you take an upright off of the 72 and swap it with one on the older Cub then you would have one forward and one to the rear like Farmall did originally. Although one set would be backwards from what the factory did.

As long as grease is getting where it needs to be does it really matter if it's coming from the front, the back, or an alien spaceship? I personally would not go through all that work just to appease the correct police.

I’m happy the way they are. I was just wondering why one cub, both sides are to the front and one, both sides to the rear. Just seems strange that two unrelated cubs are like that. My other 49 cub, the right one is to the rear and left is to the front.

I didn’t think anyone would actually go to the trouble of switching the uprights. Just trying to answer the gentleman’s question.
