I have had to add a gallon of water to the truck I drive at work every 3 or 4 months since it was new. We never could find where it was going. Also, the water temperature would climb faster in a pull than the identical truck we have. When the fan kicked in, it would bring the temp right back down.
Two weeks ago, the oil temperature started over heating when pulling hard. Apparently, someone at Cummins thought it was a good idea to "cool" oil with 190* water instead of putting the cooler in the front where the air is 100* or lower. Until then, I didn't know that engine has a water based oil cooler. Last weekend our mechanic changed the oil thermostat (a 6 hour job because everything else was in the way), but that didn't change anything. 2 days ago he changed the entire cooler (a 4 hour job). That stopped the oil from overheating, stopped the water from heating up so fast, and also found that the old cooler was leaking the water into the oil, but it was so slow, we never saw anything wrong in the oil. That cooler was bad from the factory.
The more I see how they design new vehicles, the more determined I am to keep my older vehicles going.
