Hello All,
now that the most broken flail mower in the world is back together, it's time to replace the knives. Unfortunately I have not been able to find new ones that match the the old ones (3/4" wide, 4 1/2" long, 5/16" pivot hole, bent at a slight angle near the cutting end).
What I think I know from looking at scanned copies of the mower manuals, related posts with pictures and a few lucky Google searches, is that my mower is a Mott model LB (Lo-Boy). And from the Mott FHC and LB Instruction Manual in our archive, Parts List page 1, plate 2, ref 15 shows the knives that it shipped with, and they look like mine. Mott's part number for this particular knife is a C5, but so far that bit of info hasn't helped.
So then I stumble across pictures of a nicely rebuilt Mott mower, identical to mine except it has short, wide knives that are hanging from rings which then attach to the cuttershaft.
What I am beginning to suspect is that there are different types of knives for mowing in different conditions, and as long as they fit and don't hit (hey, I just made that up), it's okay to run a different type knife then what came with the mower originally.
Due to the expense of replacing all the knives, I want to make sure the one I choose is compatible with my mower and is able to tackle the weeds & star thistle now taking over my field. So I'm looking forward to hear back from those in the Flail Mower know.
Thanks in advance ~
