First time using 23A disc harrow

Used the 23A disc harrow to bust up the ground I plowed the other day. First time for me using a disc. It did a great job! Sure was fun too!

I see in the manual you can tie a rope to the adjusting handle. I didn’t try that, maybe next time. Seemed to work just fine dragging it over the ground.

I can see why so many people use these cubs for their garden. They do a good job and they’re fun to use too!

Looks good.

I tow one or two sections of peg toothed harrow behind the disk harrow. This further breaks up the clods, smooths the soil, and not having to separately peg tooth harrow.

The adjustment rope is attached to the tractor, not you. I use soft copper wire attached to the seat. Idea is that if the towed implement breaks loose it does not jerk you off the tractor.

I use a rope for adjusting the angle. I leave my 23A in the woods when not in use so I don’t have to mow around it. When it’s time to move it, there is no angle on the blades so that it doesn’t mess my yard up. When I get to the garden, I use rope to lift the lever. Typically I adjust all the way to greatest angle. Sometimes the plowed soil(load) tells me angle is too great and rope comes in handy. You can lessen the angle without rope, but you’ll find it difficult to increase the angle without rope(or wire).

Do you have any photos of your peg harrow? Some of the farmers out here with the bigger tractors have stuff dragging after the big discs they use.

I see, that makes sense, don't want to go flying backwards off the tractor!

I do the same thing. I have a spot carved out in the woods in the back of my property where I store the disc. It's out of the way and out of sight.

There are some lines in my yard now where I had to turn around with the tractor after making a pass with the disc, but that should all disappear in a couple of weeks. I noticed the same thing when I bought the discs last summer and pulled them into the woods. It made some slice marks but they went away after a while. It's out back so I don't really care anyway.

I'll have to check out the rope/wire idea. I just dragged the disc, I didn't even mess with the angle of the discs or anything. I think there's a way to lock them straight so you can back them up too. Right now I just pull into the woods and then unhook them and pull them back into spot myself. It's not terrible, but when I get older if I'm still messing around with this stuff, that won't be an option haha!

I do not have photos. Internet search for peg toothed harrows. Several designs are out there by different manufacturers.

Farmers use to use 6 or 8, or more, sections of peg toothed harrow ganged together.

I purchased an 8 section harrow with evener for $25-, few years ago. Cut one section down to tow behind a Cub Cadet and use one section behind a Cub tractor.

They come up at auction. Or place a want ad in the local newspaper.

Oh ok cool, I see. I'll have to look into that. I could probably find something local to buy and just stash it in the woods next to the disc.

Recommend an out of the weather off ground storage for implements. Gotta keep them from rusting and expensive repairs in the future.

On the peg toothed harrows. The construction, pegs, and clamps, are different from the various manufacturers. When you purchase, obtain a set of 3 or four identical harrows. This will provide repair material - parts.

I don't have the space to store everything inside unfortunately. I keep the front blade on a moving dolly in front of the tractor in the garage, and I can keep the plow in the garage during the winter months, but the cultivators and disc have to sit outside. I do have some pallets out in the woods to keep the stuff up off the ground. I could cover them up with a tarp in the winter, but that's about all I can do for now. I have a 2.5 car garage with a big lean to on the back and then a small shed out by the chickens. Both are filled with cars, dirtbikes, tractors, lawn equipment, bicycles, quads, etc.

I did grease all the fittings on the disc and all the discs turn freely. One disc on the front on one side is really shot, lots of rust, missing pieces, but the rest are all pretty good.

I'll keep that in mind regarding the spare parts for the peg tooth harrow.
