I changed the H4 mag out and the tractor tries to crank but want quite go. I did move the rotor button to where it looks like it lines up with #1 with the pointer on what looks like #1. There are 3 lines marked on the balancer where the pointer is up front. Which one of these will be TDC for #1? This may be why the mag is off a tad.

Time the H to the first of the double marks on the crankshaft pulley. Make certain that No. 1 is TDC on the compression stroke, sounds like you may be on the exhaust stroke.

Not only that they are hard to time with the mark in the middle of the engine.Yes main thing is to be on compression stroke and at TDC[top dead center]I was going from side to side trying to see my timing marks.Good luck and let us know how it turns out.Kevin
 
I'm a bit confused. Are we trying to set the engine to TDC #1 cylinder or setting the magneto rotor.

I&T manual IH-8, paragraph 56 describes how to locate TDC when the crankshaft pulley marks are messed up or missing.

As far as 3 marks on the crankshaft pulley, if that is what you are saying, I don't know. My books says 2 marks at most.
 
I am just getting back to the forum. There are 3 stamped marks on this one. 2 very close together and then another one maybe an inch past the first two. I assumed I would use the first one I came to. Now this mag does not make the click sound that the J4 does on the cub so i had a hard time trying to see and hear where I was in rotation. I am going to pull the valve cover and watch the rocker arms move so I will know for sure where TDC is and then see where I get. I only paid $225.00 for the H and fluffed hay with it last summer. The man I bought it from only knew how to gas and drive it. It came with an old Roto Cycle stalk cutter complete. I like this machine so that is why I ask for help. I will let you know how it goes. The first of those marks (I believe the one by its lonesome) should be the one to line up to grease the clutch pilot bearing...check the access cover in the bell housing, when lined up a zerk should be there. Then work from the other two. I'm not that familiar with mag's but I believe that TDC should then be the second mark, at which the mag should trip.

I have now learned something new on the H. I hope I understood you to say that removing the cover will show me TDC on the flywheel. If so I will not have to remove the valve cover. Thanks guys.
 
No Chris I think you misunderstood me, the pilot bearing zerk will line up with the access hole in the bell housing at the first mark, then as you rotate the engine to the second mark the No. 1 cylinder will come up on TDC. To be certain you're not on the exhaust stroke I'd pull the plug...sorry 'bout that
