Farmall H Live hydraulics Question

Hello

I have a '42 H and want to put live hydraulics on it -
I understand there is a pump that fits between the front cover and the mag (
removing the spacer flange )
I purchased a hydraulic pump at a junk yd
the man said it was off a farmall 300, & should fit the H
I gave it a trial fit yesterday - looks pretty good except the mounting bolt
holes are just a little off - say less than an 1/8"
Has anyone ever encountered this? How did you make it work?

I'm considering drilling out the holes in the pump :| but don't want to go too big

Also I have a char-lynn power steering unit
I was wondering if the live hydralic pump could power the power steering motor?

Unfortuneately, adding live hydraulics is not quite that easy. I have never done it but have done a little internet research in the past. I seem to recall the main problem was the cam gear (or was it the distributor drive gear?) has to be a later version (Super H or 300) or it would basically disintigrate in short order driving the pump. Since you have to remove the front engine cover to change that, you then put the later front engine cover on with the correct mounting holes.
 
If you could find an old M&W pump you might not have to change anything out. They were made for converting the Hs & Ms to live hydraulics.

You've run into the main issues with putting the IH pump on an older tractor.

Round about 1950, IH changed the bolt spacing and installed heavier cam gears in preparation for the distributor driven Liftall system. To do it "right" you need the crankshaft and cam gear off a 1950 or later H, Super H, 300, or 350. Also the front engine plate off the same post 1950 tractor.

The problem with drilling the holes out is you have to get the gear mesh right or it will chew the gears up in short order.

The other problem is USED pumps are usually removed from the tractor for a reason. They leak, or are shot. IH pumps cannot be rebuilt, unfortunately, and new ones are $800+
 
Interesting . .. .I'm glad I asked before digging into it :oops:

but now considering changing the gear(s) and front cover
I found since a marking on the tank stating that the the engine was overhauled
in 1977
I'm wondering if super h gears were installed?
is there a way to tell (by size?) if I have original gears?
also I believe the 3-1/2" shoulder that mounts in the block gives ( or is supposed to )
the correct center to center distance for the gears
are there any links to info related to this project??

Doubtful if the gears were installed. That's not a normal wear item. Usually an overhaul is sleeves, pistons, rings, main and rod bearings, crank turned if necessary, and a valve job.

AFAIK the difference is the thickness of the gear, not the diameter. Otherwise the ratios would not be the same.

I'm not aware of any specific links, but the discussion comes up frequently on other tractor boards.
