Farmall Cub Clutch

I decided to adjust my clutch, it's the first time after I installed everything from new. I set the pedal free movement to 1" then took the cover off I noticed one of the clutch finger adjusting lock nuts came loose and the finger appeared to be sitting a little lower than the other 2. I raised it up until I seen it touch the throw out bearing at the same time the other 2 fingers did. Is this good enough? I tried making a tool out of thick copper wire to measure the 1 1/4" finger height but there really isn't anything to get a good accurate measurement off of. How do you guys do it?

Well I found something from one of you other guys that used a thick copper wire and put an "L" bend in it at 1 1/4" long and raise the finger to touch the copper wire. Problem is I couldn't see when it would touch. You have to adjust your pedal free play first to make as much room as possible in there. You can slide it between the throw out bearing and clutch finger. There's is a very slight lip for the wire to register on, make sure your no sitting on top on the spring leg. One slight modification I made to mine was to make a longer "L" shape at 1 1/2" long then measure up 1 1/4" and put a nice and straight sharpie mark on it. You will still need a helper to hold the flashlight so you can see what your doing. Making it this way makes it a lot easier to tell when the clutch finger comes up to just touch the bottom of the sharpie mark. Also makes it a lot easier to double check them when your done to make sure they are all the same height. The one where the nut came loose was sitting about 3/8" low and the other 2 were about 1/4" low. Now there all the same height at 1 1/4". Maybe this will help others.1000002364.jpg

There is usually a flat surface in the pressure plate, below the fingers. Put the end of the measuring tool on that. It's important that the fingers be the right height.
Below is a picture showing where to measure the 1 1/4" distance.
They have said on here that 1 3/16" is ok too.
The picture shows the pressure plate off the flywheel. The pressure plate has to be assembled with the disc, on the flywheel, to measure the finger height. The finger height changes as the plate is bolted onto the flywheel.
Below is a post from the How To forum showing how to adjust the finger height.

Yep that's the spot I was referring to.

To get the fingers adjusted "Perfect" is not easy. I adjusted my fingers the usual way. I still had a little "clutch chatter" when letting the clutch out slow in First or Reverse. What I did was look through the "inspection hole", I slowly depressed the clutch pedal to see which of the 3 fingers was contacting the TOB too soon, or, was having a gap when the other 2 fingers contacted the TOB.

Then, I loosened the locknut and turned the finger adjustment screw in the proper direction. Now, when I let out the clutch, the contact of the clutch disc with the pressure plate is even, with no chatter. This adjustment is very "touchy". Personally, I think IH should have used finer threads on the adjusting screw & locknut, so that a small rotation of the screw wouldn't move the finger so much.
