Farmall A implements questions.

After jumping in and getting an A model, impulse buy thread, I’ve been looking for implements. The tractor came with cultivators and I probably have all the hand lift levers, five of them. I’m not sure what else is available from the previous owner as the tractor was brought up locally to sell and the farm it came from is maybe 3 hours away. Now I located a grader blade, single bottom plow and sickle bar from a Super A relatively close.

I see where the A single plow would attach to a Y bracket arrangement connected to the front axle and the Super A plow would connect to a front facing draw bar. If I purchased the Super A plow could I just remove the spring brackets and make an extension beam to connect to my Y bracket?

The grader blade may just be the main frame and blade. I’d probably just make a cross support to the finals and belly mount it which would require the least amount of fabrication. Would there be anything about the sickle bar to make it more specific to the A or Super A? I’ll ad pics when I can.

Thanks Z

The Super A implements won't fit. Your best choice among the ones you found is the blade. The blade was designed to fit both tractors, but requires extra parts to fit an A. And you indicate it doesn't even have the mounting parts for a Super A.

As I said in the other thread, you have levers for a pneumatic lift. Those levers are for depth adjustment and are not long enough or have a long enough throw to actually lift an implement.

Thanks Jim, I’ll get it eventually. Hopefully I’ll
find out what was with the tractor soon. I certainly don’t want to start collecting stuff I don’t need, been doing that for far too long.

In your other post it looks like you bought a really nice looking tractor.

Is this your first tractor?

Dont get me wrong, I like my old IH Farmalls, but depending on what you plan on doing with them, Implements can be a real pain finding. :(

A early plain A is like a B or BN, (my opinion) good for rides and pulling wagons, hand lift belly mowers, trailer type implements (trailer type plow, brush hog, ground drive hay rake, are some to come to mind)!

What are some of your desires to use your tractor for?

If you have in mind to do any farming or gardening, my recommendation is to get something with hydraulics!

Happy tractoring! :)

Wow I just wrote a nice long blabbering reply and lost it. So in a nutshell I’ve just had a few 154’s to cut the grass with which I replaced with a Kubota L185 but had a 3pt finish mower. Ugh, I hated the mower but liked the Kubota. Switched to a big lawn/garden tractor for cutting the grass. Found this A looking for another 154 and just bought it. Now that I have it and it has the cultivators I might as well put in a garden if I get the plow that was supposed to be with it or find another. Figured I’d put a snow blade on it too or whatever I can find.

I have a MF 60H 4wd loader backhoe for heavy work and destroying things but it’s a bit large for around the house. I could make life easier and get something with hydraulics and a 3pt but what fun would that be. Am I going to restore this and make it all purdy? No, do I care if I don’t have the right knob for the kill switch? No. Just want to make it useful. Did I say blabbering earlier? Time to stop. Z

I might add: The older you get the less likely you're going to want to be switching those implements around. I have a super A and don't like to have to change implements around.

I have both. an A and a SA. neither one is easy to find equipment for other than mowers. My SA is in the process of getting a 3-pt. hitch made for it. I have the parts, now to cut/weld them together, THEN the SA becomes a useful tractor! --- as for the poor ole A ---- its destined for mower duty for the rest of its life!

The A looks just like it's newer cousins--Super A, 100, 130, 140--but it is an odd duck when it comes to implements.

As to availability, location, location, location. The common Super A-140 implements are not too hard to find in the Southeast.

Well I picked up an A60 plow but no mounting brackets and will have to make the substitute draw bar. I found measurements here on this site so I’m going to focus on getting that set up to mid mount the blade. When I get around to it I’ll make a trip to pick up the plow that’s supposed to go with the tractor. I was told theres a corn planter and disc also. No other parts are available.

I’ve scrapped the idea of a belly mower as I have too many steep hills and off camber cutting to do comfortably. Going to go back and look for a 154 or 185. I appreciate everyone’s input so far

If you do Facebook, there's a pretty active Farmall A/B group on there. Those guys might be able to help you with plow parts.

My father-in-law has a 185. It's capable but you can't let the grass get ahead of you. It's pretty close to maxed out with that 60" deck.

IF you get a 185/154 go for one with creeper gear---- THEN you can bush hog with them ---- Thats what my 185 will do ----my other 185 became a parts tractor since it dont have the creeper gear in it and they are useless without it! ---- Mow every day and you can get buy with them, BUT when you have important stuff to do--- mowing is the last thing to get done, IF it gets done!

As stated before I’ve had 154’s in the past and never really had an issue with cutting grass, used to do it in second most of the time. I definitely want independent brakes to get it to pivot, ha. I’m in no hurry so if one comes up so be it.I don’t plan on traveling any more than an hour away and am located 1/2 hour east of Cleveland. I don’t do Facebook as a matter of principle as I have no filter.

Have to laugh as I’ll lose my replies mid way through using my phone. It was suggested in a PM that I try a Facebook group and I answered that here instead. Should make better sense now when reading through. Anyhow one reason I’m pursuing an older tractor for mowing etc is that they run so smoothly with little vibration. Had some back issues arise after getting rear ended and regular garden tractors or zero turns vibrate way too much. Driving for 20 minutes or more isn’t pleasant either. Unfortunately I have way too much to maintain and relying on other people won’t work. I’m sure there are many here that experience the same issues. I’ve see suspension seats for $100 give or take. Anyone try one out? Tractor Supply has them for around $125 I do believe. I tried a friends zero turn with an aftermarket air ride seat that was nice but it the seat was $800 nice.

My 190xtd allis has a suspension seat in it ---- kinda a crock since it rocks you to sleep and makes it hard to reach the peddles in the 190----You need a LOT of room for them to rock, so mounting them in small or tight places is out! ---- I hate mine!! I had back and neck surgeries 20 years ago ( spinal degenerative disease) and the soft ride seats made it worse for me so I kept the air ride in the W-900 that I drove pumped up tight!
