Fan Bearing Replacement

Hi All,
I have a bad fan bearing and it needs to be placed has anyone done this and know how to do it? :lost:

Back story: Have a cub that hasn't run in a long time by my estimation. I just completed a valve job and went thru everything including putting oil in the fan. When I first started her, she made a noise in the front and I shut her down quickly because I could tell what it was. I restarted her and she made almost no noise except a slight whine which disappeared in about 30 seconds. I then let he idle as low as possible and I monitored the oil pressure, voltage and temp and everything seemed right. I let it run for approximately 30 minutes and monitored it carefully.

Then she stopped seizure style, I removed the fan and could feel stiffness and holding now bolt down and turning it with a wrench I started seeing my oil on the shaft and now she is loose but it feels like the bearing has rust in it and I think it is not safe.

I am thankful for all the wonderful advice in here about thinks to do before a first start, I was a great guide and I followed it all including polarization, because my battery was backwards when I bought it

Any help with the bearing is appeciated

Once you get the fan off the tractor, a rebuild is easy. Just need two gaskets and some 10W oil.
Here is the complete fan assembly disassembled.

If you have time, patience and gasket material, you can make your own. Here you can see where the two gaskets fit. Disregard the small gasket on the service manual...it does not go with the fan.

When installing the oil slinger, make sure you have a backwards 6 when looking at the front of the fan assembly.

Some manuals actually show it wrong.

Rockfarmer, l have to say, your step by step documentation on your project, along with the pics you took are going to be invaluable to others on this forum. Case in point, the above pictures and info.

Out of curiosity, when I removed my fan and held it fan up, I had oil now coming onto the shaft where the threads are, is there a seal on that end or does it just rely on the fact that the oil level is below the shaft?

also do you have to replace the bushings?

Mine certainly sounds like rust granules in the bushing.. once the oil came out the end it turns freely.

I had looked for a rebuild kit, but couldn't find one, so I ended up ordering a new unit..

Hi,
You are supposed to turn with a wrench on the 6 sided place on the fan shaft, just to the rear of the generator pulley, which turns the shaft in the nut. The nut is held in the slots in the casting, and should not be turned, it can break the casting, they have said on here before.

Below is a page from a Cub owner's manual showing the fan belt tension at the lower right of the page.

The next page tells about replacing the belt, the pic is not very clear though. It shows lubing the fan hub also.

There is no seal at the rear of the fan assembly. The ones I have seen have no bushings in the fan. The pic in the manual above shows the bearing. :)

So per the original question... The "new" style fans are built with sealed bearings. The "old" style fans were built with unsealed bearings (lubrication required). Would be nice to be able to put new bearings in the assembly.
Are there replacement sealed or unsealed bearings available?
Anyone have a good cross reference bearing part number for these?

I have copied Rockfarmer's post into the How To forum so it will be easily found for future reference.

Hi,
If you look at the pics of an original Cub fan assembly, the original bearing in it was only a machined hole in a casting that ran on a machined shaft, the hole and shaft bearing areas were about 4 inches long, from my remembering them. So there is no way to put ball bearings or similar in that, unless someone has done it that I have not seen on here.
I don't know what the sealed bearing fans look like inside them.

I never saw one with a replaceable bushing in the casting, I think.
