The only K-181 used by IH was in the WF series 86 and there were 8,489 units produced. Below is the information on the K-181S is from TRACTOR SPECS. GARDEN & SUPER GARDEN TRACTORS (Original thru 782). The chart I spaced out below was altered and all the spaces taken out when posted. The K-161 was discontinued and the dealers would replace that engine with the K-181 if replaced by a dealer.

Like Geezer said, the model 86 was the only IH built model to use the K181, but after Kohler stopped making the K161 and it was no longer available, IH provided the K181 as a replacement engine, when needed, for the K161's in the Original, 70, 71, 72, 73 models. I don't know when Kohler dropped the K161, but the last IH model to use it was the model 73 and they were part of the series (73, 106, 107, 126, 127) built from 8/69 to 8/71. The 147 was also part of that series and it was built from 11/69 tp 8/71.

My cub cadet 70 came with a replacement 8hp kolher engine already in it. I use this 70 with my snowplow and to haul my firewood. I been thinking about bumping it up to a 10hp or a 12hp kolher but its so good on gas.

You can pick out a replacement engine because its a shade of gray not the normal yellow in color. I have a cub cadet 122 which also has the replacement engine too.
 
Well the reason I asked was because I recently bought a 62 original, The guy gave me the motor that came with it when he bought it. I didn't pay any attention until last night and realized it was an 8Hp so then I started to do a search and got no where. This doesn't appear to have bean repainted . [Appear] so this could be on the rare side? I don't think it was out of the original he just got it with it. He said nothing about replacing the engine. Jack
 
The 8 hp Kohler was used in John Deere lawn tractors. And probably a number of other make "tractors". Not sure how rare they are.
 
Was just looking through Craigs list and found a 72 with a 8HP. Guess they are fairly common. Thanks guys, As always your on top of things.
 
I wouldn't part with any of my kolher or wisconsin engines because sometime down the road i may need one of them. I purchased a 124 cadet were the PO air conditioned the block with the connecting rod. Now i just found a 12hp short block in great condition that needs to be bored .010" over.

I'm scrapping a gilson tractor and i'm going to use the 16hp briggs engine for my firewood processor next. I found the tractor and attachments a new home.
