Distributor housing oil???

What weight oil do you put in the distributor housing? How often do you check it?

I'm seeing a seal on the distributor drive shaft and a seal on the drive in the engine so i figure we have to fill the drive housing with oil. You have to lube the gears right?

Bill,
Assuming you have a distributor (vs. magneto) there a two holes on the side of the distributor with screws in them. Remove the screws and thread in a grease fitting. At the drive housing fitting give it several pumps with standard grease. At the distributor fitting fill with grease until it comes out the relief hole on the opposite side. Remove the grease fitting (zerk) and replace with screws.
This info is in the Owners Manual. In the 1955 edition it's on page 28.

A dab of grease in each once per year is plenty unless the tractor is used frequently. Too much grease can be as bad as not enough.

Bill, I'm glad you mentioned the Moly grease again. I looked today the the different varieties and could not find one that had "Moly" in it as an additive. Where do you get yours at??
Thanks in advance.

Raymond trry searching for Molybdenum, people use "Molly" because Molybdenum is too hard to pronounce :D :D

Not to mention too hard to spell. :)

Raymond,

Try searching for Moly Lube on the net. Or, in searching e-Bay, several varieties of molybdenum base grease show up as Moly Lube in smaller quantities.

Tractor supply has it, i think the tube is red/white for the grease gun. I been buying it at TSC were its much cheaper. Were all frugal at times right?

For the other moly additives i shop at; http://www.tsmoly.com

I just purchased some moly additives for my engine oil and for the tranny and final drives. I figure as i rebuild them i'll add moly to all the oils too at the sametime.

Sorry i went to bed early lastnite, this weather has me feeling more tired lately.
