Diagram of Farmall Cub transmission??

I have a (supposedly) 1951 Cub. Apparently some sort of "idler" gear has a broken tooth, and it makes one heck of a clatter in Reverse and in 2nd Gear.

1st and 4th are fine (why I think it's some sort of gear common to 2nd and Reverse)

So, does anyone have a diagram of the transmission that I can check out BEFORE I start tearing into it???? :) :D

If you go to TM Tractor parts website, he has a good picture of the pinion shaft and the order of gear installation. I'll try and attach a link, but I'm on this old laptop.....dunno if it will work.

Yep!! Worked!! But I'm confused (not an uncommon occurence!!)

I see a 1st and Reverse idler, but I'm having the clackety-clak on 2nd (my "normal" mowing gear) and Reverse. My 1st gear (too slow for mowing) and my 3rd gear (too fast for mowing) are OK.

Well, now I'm confused again, I'll have to check it out again (once I get other parts put back on and running again) Thanks guys!!!

I was afraid someone was going to come to that conclusion. BUT...... :D I "thought" I was getting EXACTLY the same sound ("clackety-clak") in Reverse and 2nd gear. I'll have to check again; I don't see a shared connection there either :cry: I'll be back in a few days with a clearer picture of what I "think" I know :lol: :shock: :lol:

Jim, where in Texas are you?? I'm in Garwood, about 65 miles SW of Houston.

Did you check your differential ring and pinion gear?
I just repaired the transmission on my 49. The differential broke where the left final drive goes in, allowing the shaft to wallow out the seal. So I replaced what broke, and installed a new 1-R slider speed gear. After spending all day getting it back together, I wished I had spent more money while I had it all apart and replaced all bearings and gears. Then perhaps it would go another 50+ years before a major malfunction.
I will also invest insome type of lift. I have a couple of small floor jacks, but nothing mobile to assist in "stabbing" the transmission back in.
I just picked it up and did my best jousting imitation.

The problem may turn out to be a bearing. The bearings all carry a load (but varying amounts) in all gears.

I am in the Dallas area.
 
John, even though you're only noticing the sound in R and 2nd, check your wheel lugs, rim bolts, and wheel weight bolts. Also jack up one wheel at a time and reach in where you can touch each brake drum while you rock a wheel back and forth to make sure a drum isn't loose on the shaft. Somethings you learn the hard way. :oops:
