Cub Valve Clearance Other Issues.

Hey fellas I decided today to adjust my valves. Since I got the tractor I always kept hearing a ticking sound coming from around that area. So I took the cover off and checked them all. They were all at .013 with #8 at .015. So I went ahead and set them all to .015. In reality I set them to .014 but I can get a .015 shim in there but it's tight. So I don't know what the ticking was about but I won't know until I get the tractor back up and running. I have to fix a crack in the top radiator piece that connects the radiator to the other piece that connects to the engine. I flushed the radiator also and will put the cleaner that IH recommend in the manual through it as well. My plugs also have carbon build up but not real bad. I haven't checked them since last year. It appeared that the #4 cylinder plug looked good but I could have cleaned it and I can't remember if I did or not.

ticking noise, while its idling remove spark plug wire from each cylinder one at a time and see if noise goes away or changes

So I don't know what the ticking was about but I won't know until I get the tractor back up and running.
Hi,
The Cub engine doesn't have hydraulic valve lifters, it is common for the valve mechanism to make clicking, or tapping noises.
I have found that the wider the gap at the bottom of the valves, the more tapping noises the mechanism makes.
Years of the Cub owner's and operator's manuals say to set the gap to .013"
The Cub service manual GSS-1411, made in the 1970's says to use .015"

Well I set mine to .014-.015. Hopefully that's ok and doesn't hurt anything. Most of the research I did everyone said .015. I fired it up and it sounded ok but I'm not mechanic either.
