Cub Shifter Problem

Hello All, I am putting the final drive back together on my 1953 F Cub, mean while I replaced the shifter and cover because it was welded and bent. The used shifter looked great but was very dirty. I took it apart and cleaned it and painted it. Now when I placed the shifter cover on the trans without a gasket just to see if it works good and smooth, the shifter lever guide tang hits the trans housing before the shifter sets flat on the housing. This shifter guide tang is tight against the shifter cover. The tang looks like It should line up with this indentation. It looks like the tang keeps the the shifter lever guide from being pressed to far into the shifter cover. I see that some Cubs don't have a shifter lever guide with a tang!
I was going to remove the shifter lever guide and turn it 180 degrees so it does not hit the cover indentation.
Is this the right thing to do? I will be using a thick cork gasket with aviation sealer, but if I don't change the guide the cover will fit but it will not be tight at the rear center of the cover.
OK, if you can understand what I'm saying you are doing pretty good, as for me I'm going to get another beer and wait for some help.
 
Sorry, but I do not understand your comment regarding the shifter lever guide tang hitting the trans housing before the shifter sets flat on the housing. The photos below show the shifter guide before and after disassembly from the cover plate. There are three (3) assembly guides in each part. Two indentations and a bulge in the cover to match corresponding bulges and slot in the lever guide housing. If your assembly looks like this, I do not see how it is possible to assemble the lever guide 180deg from the orientation in the photo. Or maybe it does not look like this. What am I missing?

Looking at your shifter guide in both photos you will see a slot in the outside diameter just in front of the c-clamp you have there. My guide has a tang that was notched out of the guide where the slot is in yours. This slot is bent 90 degrees to the guide.

I believe I found photos online of shifter assemblies like you describe. Isn't the H-shifter pattern on the lever guide non-symmetrical? If so, wouldn't rotating it 180deg prevent it from shifting correctly?
 
If I would rotate it, it would be the same as it is right now. Here are pictures of the guide and tang. The guide cup or housing is sticking down from the shifter cover .700 of an inch. The tang is sticking down from the shifter cover .100 of an inch.

If I cut 1/8 to 3/16 of an inch off of the length of the tang it would work OK. This shifter cover came from another Farmall Cub, so maybe that transmission housing was notched out for the tang.

So I guess it is hitting on this? Looking at several covers online some look like they have a little deeper offset up than yours. Hard to say. I can't imagine that trimming the tab would hurt. Also your gasket and tightening the bolts would probably snug it. Your cover might have a little twist in it. The main thing is to get that plate to seal & keep out water. It won't affect the shifting to tweak the cover to get it tight.
