Cub mower 42” vs 59”

I don't use the cub anymore to mow. I used it a few times to mow some land trust meadows which were 3 ft tall with the 42 and it never faltered...not once. The pic was the light part of the field. My point is that if you are in the right gear and the engine isn't tired out.... it won't bog down with the 59. Also, if you need to take a smaller bite down to 42" or so at times...isn't it still better to have 59" when you can use it?

Good info, thanks!

Also consider your governed speed setting. This past summer I bought one of the cheap Amazon tachs and measured nlgs on my 65…iirc it was only in the 1750 range. Should have been at least 1850. Some governor stop adjusting and we got up close to 2000. Mower cuts better…mowing time cut…and it does better going into heavy places. If you’ve got a worn throttle sector, you’ll be fixing that too.

I'm leaning towards the Woods 42 for now. Will fit in the garage easier. Maybe I'll get another Cub one day and put a Woods 59 on it. There's actually a few A's and Super A's near me with Woods 59 mowers on them that aren't that much. I have to stay off of FB marketplace haha!

Had the Cub out yesterday for a bit. Pushed some brush behind our chicken coops out back. Ran great! My daughter came outside and took a photo haha!

Important: be sure the front of the mower deck is a little lower than the rear so you cut on the leading edge of blades and not the entire blade. I have 59" and it works great.
That's how I set up my riding mower decks too. Usually about 1/4" to 3/8" lower in the front than the back.

If you are plowing you might consider picking up a second set of rear wheel weights…..they are cheaper than the fronts!!
I second the tire chains as well.

It does a good job with the current set up so far. Just rear wheel weights (one set), no front wheel weights, and no chains. Maybe with more snow it won't do as well. I'll wait until I see that happen though before I change anything.

Mine did ok until we ha ice under the snow then no bueno.

The flail is nice but it does not "mulch" the cuttings as much. Some people may not like the larger clippings on the lawn. It also takes up more parking space because the mower is offset.
There were plates supplied by Mott to convert a flail to a mulch, I think I have the only set . Both my dad and myself were/are bothered by allergies, he tried everything to try to help. The main problem with the Mott is the open front of the mower, all that dirt and dust would drift out of the mower, the radiator fan would then blow all that right into your face. The mulch plates would mount on the front and the back of the mower and you'd run the knifes so that they would run opposite of the normal way so that the cutoffs would eject forward rather than to the rear. The plates kept it "contained" better so the knifes would chop it up more. We ran it the normal way just to try to keep the dust down. Here's a picture that kind of shows the front plate, it's at the bottom in the picture. Dad finally gave up and added to the fleet a '59 Lo Boy with a 59 Woods which does a much nicer job anyway. The yard did get away from me one year when we stayed south one extra week and spring came early, but I have an 8N with a 6ft Mott for those emergencies.

I run my cub with a 60” and love it. I can get close to trees and fence due to it being wider than the rear wheels. I can mow my very hilly yard with 6” of grass in second gear at about 2/3 throttle most of the time. There are a few very steep spots I need to drop to first and very few times do I need to go full throttle. If it gets where I need full throttle I lift the mower up a little and it’s no issue. One year I didn’t mow 2 acres until the end of the year and I had to lift the deck half way at the first pass and the second was all the way down.

Sounds like the 59" will work just fine as long as there aren't any big hills or super thick/tall grass. It would probably work just fine in my case. Unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to store it in the lean to in its current spot with that big mower attached to it. It would have to sit outside by the shed or something which I'd rather not do. I think I'll try the 42" mower this year and see how it goes and determine if I want to try out a 59" in the future.

For me it take about an hour and a half to take it off or put it on. I then stand it up next to the wall and secure it in place. I swap it with a snow plow. Just some food for thought.

I wouldn't want to take that big mower on and off multiple times a year. I wouldn't mind swapping it back and forth in the spring and fall. I have a spot in my lean to that is wide enough to fit my tractor plus all my motorcycles/dirtbikes, riding mower, etc. If I put a 59" mower on it, I won't be able to fit everything in there. With the 42" it'll fit under the tractor and I can keep everything the same as it is now.

I already have a riding mower that I've been using for 7 years. I'm just really looking for a way to use the Cub more. I figured I could use the 42" mower deck to cut the back property every other week or so and give my riding mower a little break here and there.

That is how I would use it. The 59" mower does not give you anything the riding mower does not give you already. The 42" mower lets you do high stuff and does a good job on the lawn.

42 is only a bush hog ---not wide enough to take out wheel tracks and you cant come back and pick up whats ran down ---it wont cut it! does a terrible job! 59 just does cover the tracks but you lack power UNLESS you mow every day and who has time for that. ---- i got important stuff to do but IF you want to waste all your time on a mower ---- go for it!! lol!!!

Sonny I think you are being a little hard on the 42" mowers. The woods 42 and the C2 are bush hogs. I find them very effective in pasture cutting. If the grass is wet yes you will have tire tracks. I have found cutting the grass dry reduces that to a minimum. here is a post I did a few years ago on the woods https://farmallcub.com/community/threads/got-to-love-a-woods-42-and-a-well-tuned-cub.105332/

They are not the best option for lawns but dahl383 has something for that. This gives him a different tool.
